Series: GROWING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD with Pastor Mark Finley

Introduction:

At the center is the crucial question of how our relationship with God can grow and remain alive. Whether we have believed for a long time or are just at the beginning, we are invited to get to know God more deeply. Often we realize that our image of Him is unclear or that our spiritual life has lost depth. This is exactly where God’s invitation begins: He wants to meet us anew and renew our relationship with Him. This relationship is not just a part of our lives—it influences our thinking, our decisions, and our daily life.

The journey of faith is not a quick success but a process that requires time, patience, and perseverance. There are highs and lows, moments of closeness and times of distance. Yet even when we stumble or stop, we are invited to rise again and keep going. God does not leave us alone on this path but accompanies us through His Holy Spirit. He strengthens us, guides us, and helps us continually fix our eyes on Jesus.

The Bible shows that God has always sought a close relationship with people. This theme runs like a thread throughout all of Scripture. It is still true today: God seeks closeness with us and invites us to trust Him. These lessons aim to help us recognize obstacles, grow in faith, and deepen our connection with God. They are an invitation to live more consciously, trust more, and remain in God’s love.

🪞 Lesson 1: Reality Check
✨ An honest beginning with hope

Introduction:

Lesson 1 invites us to take an honest look at our spiritual condition—not to discourage us, but to realign us. It shows that true faith is more than habit or outward forms; it is a living relationship with Jesus. It becomes clear how quickly we can fall into self-satisfaction without even noticing it. Yet this is exactly where God’s love steps in: He speaks to us, calls us back, and offers change. This lesson encourages us to face the truth while also embracing the hope that Jesus gives us. It is a call not only to know faith, but to truly live it.

❤️‍🩹 1.1 Our Condition
Honest diagnosis, living hope

This section holds up an uncompromising mirror: our faith is often comfortable but not passionate. Jesus does not describe an outwardly lost condition, but a dangerous self-satisfaction that keeps us from recognizing our true need. In this lies both the sharpness of His words—and His love, because He does not remain silent about our condition. The “faithful and true witness” speaks clearly because He wants to save, not condemn. His invitation to “exchange” shows that change is possible and does not have to come from our own strength. The hope lies in the fact that Jesus does not give up on us, but offers everything we truly need to live a new and genuine life with Him.

🔁 1.2 Rebuke, Repent, and Reward
Love that corrects and invites

Jesus’ reproof is not a sign of rejection, but the deepest expression of His love, which does not leave us in mediocrity. He shows us our true condition so that real repentance becomes possible and we can turn back. At the same time, He does not stop at diagnosis but patiently knocks at the door of our hearts and invites us into a personal, living relationship. This image makes it clear: a relationship with Jesus is not a duty, but a conscious opening of our lives to Him. The promise is overwhelming—fellowship with the God of the universe, now and forever. Whoever looks at the cross understands how far Jesus went and finds in it the strongest reason to open the door to Him today.

♾️ 1.3 Everlasting Love
Overcoming through His unchanging love

Jesus’ call to overcome is closely connected to a powerful promise: fellowship and reign with Him. Our hope is not based on our own strength, but on His victory, because He has already overcome and understands our struggles. The Bible shows through many life stories that God always takes the first step and longs for closeness with people. His love is constant and draws us even when we are weak or distant. Yet this relationship does not grow automatically—it requires a conscious decision to recognize and let go of obstacles. In the end, the comforting truth remains: God’s love is eternal, but our response determines how close we truly are to Him.

🍇 1.4 Abide
Remain connected, bear fruit

Jesus makes it clear that a true life of faith does not come from activity, but from connection. “Abiding” means living in conscious fellowship with Him and allowing Him to shape us daily. Without this connection, we cannot bear real fruit, even if it may sometimes appear so outwardly. Challenges and “pruning” are not signs of God’s absence, but means through which our lives become more mature and fruitful. Whoever abides in Jesus reflects His love and finds true joy and meaning in it. This abiding is the effective antidote to spiritual lukewarmness and brings us back into a living relationship with Him.

💧 1.5 Linked to the Vine
Life through the Spirit

Abiding in Jesus is not a forced effort, but a living process sustained by the Holy Spirit. Just as sap flows through the vine, the Spirit of God brings new life, growth, and fruit in us. Without Him, our faith remains outward and powerless, even if we do the “right” things. What matters is not our own effort, but our willingness to open ourselves daily to God’s work. The Holy Spirit comforts, convicts, guides, and directs our eyes to Jesus—He makes relationship possible in the first place. Thus, following Christ becomes not a burden, but a living expression of the love that God first placed in our hearts.

🔄 1.6 Summary
From reality check to a living relationship

Lesson 1 clearly reveals our spiritual condition: we are often lukewarm and underestimate how much we truly need Jesus. Yet His reproof is filled with love and calls us to honest repentance and a deeper relationship with Him. He invites us to receive everything we lack from Him and promises fellowship and new life. The secret of a fulfilled faith lies in abiding in Him—connected like a branch to the vine. This connection is not maintained by our own effort, but by the Holy Spirit working within us and producing growth. In this way, Jesus leads us from self-satisfaction to a living, fruitful, and love-filled relationship with Him.
