Series: GROWING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD with Pastor Mark Finley
π Lesson 5: How to Study the Bible
β¨ Why Godβs Word is Essential
Introduction:
Reading the Bible is the first stepβbut studying it properly goes much deeper. Many Christians long for a stronger connection with God but donβt know how to deepen their Bible study. This lesson shows that itβs not about speed, but about quality and dedication. Time, place, and the right attitude all play a crucial role. Godβs Word is not only meant to be read, but also understood and lived out. Those who engage with it will discover how living and personal God speaks through the Bible.
Content:
β° 5.1 Time
Quality over speed
The time we spend with the Bible is crucial for the quality of our relationship with God. Rushed reading may ease the conscience, but it rarely transforms the heart. God does not want us to skim His Word superficially, but to take intentional time to get to know Him. As in any relationship, fellowship with God requires attention and priority. In John 15, Jesus makes it clear that we are to remain in Himβand this happens only through a consistent connection. Therefore, it is more important to spend regular, intentional time with God than to read quickly without depth.
π 5.2 A Place
A dedicated place to meet with God
The place where we spend time with God plays an important role in our devotion. Jesus Himself withdrew early in the morning to a quiet, solitary place to speak with His Father. This shows that silence and separation help us focus fully on God. A fixed place can help us intentionally plan this time and turn it into a habit. Itβs not about having a perfect place, but about having a place where we can regularly find stillness. When we seek Godβs presence, that place becomes a special space of encounter with Him.
π 5.3 Deep Bible Study
Understanding and applying Godβs Word
Deep Bible study goes beyond superficial reading and requires intentional reflection and prayer. The Holy Spirit plays a central role, helping us understand and apply Godβs Word correctly. Writing, repeating, and discussing what we learn deepens understanding and makes it more personal. Itβs not about reading a lot, but about truly grasping what we read. Step by step, our understanding and relationship with God grow. Those who take the time and remain open will continually discover new depth and meaning in Godβs Word.
π€ 5.4 A Double Blessing
Giving and receiving in faith
Bible study is not only personalβit reaches its full impact when we share what weβve learned with others. Different methods help make time with Godβs Word more lively and varied. When we talk about it, we not only deepen our own understanding but also encourage others. This creates a βdouble blessingββwe grow ourselves and help others grow at the same time. Godβs Word is never meant just for us alone, but also for those around us. Those who share what theyβve learned will notice it becoming even more powerful in their own lives.
π― 5.5 βTis So Sweet!
Godβs Word fulfills and transforms
Godβs Word is compared in the Bible to honeyβsomething that is not only sweet but also nourishing. It brings not only joy, but also insight and understanding for our lives. Unlike the things of this world, this βsweetnessβ has a deep, transformative effect on our hearts. In Isaiah 55, God invites us to come to Him and truly be satisfied. His words provide direction, hope, and new life. Those who intentionally take time to receive Godβs Word will find that it fills the soul and transforms a person from within.
