Solomon has died, and now a new era begins. His son Rehoboam becomes king. Many people are curious: How will he rule? Will he be as wise as his father?
But right at the beginning, Rehoboam faces an important decision. And that decision will change everything.

👥 The people come with a request
The people of Israel gather and come to Rehoboam. They have a clear request. During Solomon’s time, they had to work hard. Many tasks were difficult, and the burden was heavy.
Now they hope things will be different. They say to Rehoboam: “If you make things easier for us, we will serve you.”
It is an important moment. Rehoboam has the opportunity to gain the people’s trust.
🤔 The king seeks advice
Rehoboam does not respond immediately. He tells the people to come back in three days. During that time, he wants to consider what to do.
First, he goes to the older men. They had served his father Solomon and have much experience. They give him clear advice: “If you are kind and considerate to the people, they will remain loyal to you.”
But Rehoboam also listens to another opinion. He goes to the young men he grew up with. They think differently. They say: “Show strength! Make it even harder for the people so they can see who is king.”
⚖️ A difficult decision
Now Rehoboam must choose. Two completely different pieces of advice lie before him. One calls for kindness and understanding. The other relies on harshness and power.
Rehoboam chooses the advice of the young men.
When the people return after three days, he gives them a harsh answer. He says he will not make their burden lighter — instead, it will become even heavier.

This decision has immediate and serious effects. The people are disappointed and angry. They feel unheard.
Many turn away from Rehoboam. They say: “Why should we follow this king?”
So the kingdom is divided. A large part of Israel separates and follows another leader. Only a small part remains with Rehoboam.
