πΊοΈ THE BOOK OF JOSHUA
βͺ Lesson 13: Choose This Day!
π 13.2 In Sincerity and Truth
β¨ Godβs story is also ours β we stand together before Him
π¦ Introduction
Joshua stands at the end of his life. Yet his words are not a farewell, but a call to decision. Not to short-term enthusiasm, but to a life of faithfulness.
βServe the Lord in sincerity and truthβ β this is not a pious formula, but a spiritual standard for generations. In these words lies a contrast to false religiosity: God does not want outward worship, but an undivided heart.

π£οΈ Answers to the Questions
π’ Question 1: What did Joshua call the Israelites to do? What does it mean to serve God in sincerity and truth?
Answer:
Joshua calls Israel to make a clear break. They are to put away all foreign gods and serve God alone. Not halfheartedly. Not culturally. But completely.
βSincerityβ means: no double life. No compromises. God does not expect a perfect life, but a whole heart.
βTruthβ means: reliability, consistency, faithfulness. Not loud promises, but lasting devotion.
To serve God βin sincerity and truthβ means:
-
To be honest β with yourself and with God
-
To be faithful β even when it is difficult
-
To be whole β not divided between God and the world
π’ Question 2: What does it mean for you personally to serve the Lord in sincerity and truth? What sometimes hinders you from doing so?
Answer:
It means following God not only in songs and prayers, but in:
-
how I handle money
-
how I think about people
-
what I do with my time
-
and what my heart is most focused on
Possible obstacles include:
-
Overwhelm in everyday life
-
Fear of what others might think
-
Self-doubt
-
Comfort
-
Unfulfilled expectations toward God
But sincerity means:
βI come to You with everything, Lord β even with my failure.β
And truth means:
βI remain with You, even when I do not understand everything.β

βBetween Two Altarsβ
A story about decision, faithfulness, and a divided heart
Chapter 1 β The Escape
Elina was 27, a law student in Melbourne β successful, driven, respected. Her childhood in the Adventist church felt like a distant memory. Too conservative, too many rules.
Then her grandmother died β the only one who had never stopped praying for Elina. While clearing out the house, Elina discovered an old diary. On the first page:
βFor Elina β if you ever come back.β
Chapter 2 β Two Altars
Elina began to read. Her grandmother had written about Elinaβs childhood: Sabbaths by the river. Childrenβs services. The first βI love Jesus.β
She remembered. But her life now was completely different. Two altars in her life:
-
The altar of success
-
And the altar of memory
βWhom am I really serving?β she suddenly asked herself.
Chapter 3 β The Invitation
In the house lay an invitation:
βMemorial Service β Joshua 24 β Decision Day β Melbourne South Church.β
Elina did not want to go. And yet, a week later, she was sitting in the last row.
The preacher read:
βServe the LORD in sincerity and truth β¦ Choose today whom you will serve.β
He looked at the congregation and said:
βNot everything at once. But begin β with honesty.β
Chapter 4 β The Crack in the Heart
Elina began to pray again. At first irregularly. Then honestly. Then deeply.
She realized she had served many gods β recognition, control, independence. But none of those altars had given her peace.
One night, kneeling on the carpet of her shared apartment, she said:
βLord, I am not whole. But I want to become whole. Show me how to serve You in truth.β
Chapter 5 β The New Path
Elina began to keep the Sabbath. She read the Bible. Lost friendships. Gained new ones.
Her life did not become βperfect,β but sanctified β step by step.
She now serves in the youth group β not as an expert, but as someone who knows how hard the road back can be.
She often tells her story with a smile:
βI stood between two altars. But I chose β in sincerity and truth.β

π§ Final Thoughts
A sincere heart is the beginning of true discipleship.
God is not waiting for outward perfection β but for your genuine, honest return.
And if you β like Elina β are standing between two altars, then remember Joshuaβs words:
βChoose today β¦ But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.β
