π§±π£ Judges 12 β When words can build bridges β¦ or walls
π€π£οΈ About conflict, courage, and three new judges
π Introduction
Sometimes something sad happens: people who actually belong together start to argue. Thatβs exactly what happens in the book of Judges, chapter 12. But in the middle of the conflict, God shows again: He continues His storyβeven when people make mistakes.
In this story, children learn how important it is to listen to God, not to anger.
π The Bible story
βοΈπ An argument begins
After Jephthah had saved Israel in the previous chapter, something unexpected happened. Another part of the people, the Ephraimites, became angry.
They came to Jephthah and said:
βWhy didnβt you take us with you when you went to fight? Weβre offended!β
They were so angry that they even threatened to burn down Jephthahβs house! π₯π³
Jephthah was shocked, but he answered calmly:
βI called youβyou did not come. I had to act, or we would have been lost.β
But Ephraim didnβt listen.
The anger was like a fire that kept getting bigger. π₯π₯π₯
βοΈ A sad battle
The argument between brothers became so great that words suddenly turned into weapons π’. Israel fought against Israel.
That is one of the saddest scenes in the book of Judges.
The battle was harsh.
Jephthahβs men wonβbut it hurt.
No one really wanted to fight against their own people.
The conflict could have been prevented,
if the people had gone to God firstβand talked with each other.
π A strange wordβand a sad ending
Part of the story feels to children almost like a scene from a movie.
Jephthahβs men stood at the Jordan River, where the Ephraimites wanted to flee.
But the two groups spoke differently.
So Jephthahβs men said:
βSay the word βShibbolethβ.β
The Ephraimites couldnβt pronounce the word correctly.
Their tongue turned it into:
βSibboleth.β
And so Jephthahβs men knew who was friend and who was enemy.
Many people died that dayβand all because of an argument that never needed to happen. π
π Three new judges
But the book doesnβt end only sadly.
After Jephthah came three new judges, and each led the land for a while:
π€ 1. Ibzan
β He had many children
β He arranged weddings and was a peaceful man π
βͺ 2. Elon
β He was a quiet judge
β Under him Israel had peace π€
π‘ 3. Abdon
β He had many sons and grandsons
β They rode on 70 donkeysβlike a royal parade π΄π΄π΄
β He was a just and kind leader
These three judges show:
God never leaves His people alone, no matter how difficult the time is.
π£ Summary
Israel argued with itselfβand it brought a lot of suffering.
But God continued to lead His people and gave new judges so that peace could return.
π Message for us today
π Arguments make hearts heavyβand can break a lot of things.
π God wants us to talk, listen, and forgive.
π Peace often begins with just one brave sentence:
βLetβs talk.β
π Even when hard things happen: God keeps leading.
π Thoughts to reflect on
β Have you ever argued and later realized it wasnβt necessary?
β How could you make peace todayβmaybe with a kind word?
β Do you want to ask God to help you forgive faster?
