🌱 GROWING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

🌄 Lesson 3 : Pride Versus Humility

📘 3.7 Questions

Honestly examining your own path

1. What additional insights about pride and humility do the following verses provide? Matthew 23:12; Psalm 25:9; 149:4; James 4:6,10

2. Reflect honestly: When was the last time you “put your goodness on display”? How did that affect your relationship with God and with those before whom you displayed it?

3. What might you need to change in your life in order to humble yourself before God and strengthen your walk with Him?

📖 1. Biblical Deepening – What do the verses say?

The Bible speaks very clearly about pride and humility, and the selected verses complement what we have learned this week.

Matthew 23:12 confirms the core principle that runs through the entire lesson: whoever exalts themselves will be humbled, and whoever humbles themselves will be exalted. God’s standards stand in direct contrast to our natural way of thinking.

Psalm 25:9 shows that God guides the humble. This means that humility is not only an attitude, but also a condition for better understanding God’s will.

Psalm 149:4 makes it clear that God delights in the humble. Their value does not lie in their performance, but in their attitude before Him.

James 4:6 and 10 summarize it clearly: God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Whoever humbles themselves before God will be lifted up by Him.

👉 In summary:
Humility opens the door for God’s work – pride closes it.

🌍 2. Honest Self-Reflection – Where do I stand?

The second question intentionally goes deeper and becomes more personal. It is no longer just about understanding, but about honesty.

“Putting your goodness on display” can take many forms. It can be obvious when we talk about our achievements or present ourselves in a positive light. But it can also happen subtly, when we expect recognition internally or compare ourselves with others.

The effect is often similar: our relationship with God becomes more superficial because the focus is on ourselves. At the same time, it can also affect our relationships with others, as genuine humility is replaced by self-presentation.

This question invites us not to avoid, but to become specific. Not general, but personal.

💡 3. Concrete Change – What does this mean for my life?

The third question leads to the crucial application. Knowledge alone does not change anything unless it leads to a conscious decision.

Humbling yourself before God does not mean devaluing yourself, but honestly acknowledging how much you need Him. It may involve recognizing pride, questioning habits, or consciously valuing others above yourself.

Sometimes these are small steps: comparing less, giving thanks more, asking for forgiveness more quickly, or being more open to correction. In other cases, it may involve bigger decisions that realign our priorities.

👉 What matters is this: change does not begin perfectly, but honestly.

✝️ 4. Spiritual Focus

These questions show that pride and humility are not theoretical topics, but affect everyday life. They also show that spiritual growth is always connected to self-examination.

God does not ask us to change ourselves, but to open ourselves to Him. Where we become honest, His grace can work. Therefore, humility is not the result of our own effort, but an attitude in which God can act.

🔧 5. Practical Step

Take a moment intentionally for personal prayer. Speak honestly with God about what has been shown to you.

Ask Him specifically:

  • to show you your pride
  • to transform your heart
  • to give you an attitude of humility

It may also help to write down a thought or a decision you are taking from this lesson.

🌟 Final Thought

These questions are not a test, but an invitation.

An invitation to be honest.
An invitation to draw closer to God.
And an invitation to consciously choose the path of humility.

Because that is where true spiritual growth begins.
