Series: GROWING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD with Pastor Mark Finley
๐๏ธ Lesson 7: Practical Prayer
โจ Prayer as a practical and daily experience with God
Introduction:
Prayer belongs to the most important foundations of the life of faith, and yet many people find it difficult to pray consistently and consciously. Often, prayer is used intensely only during times of crisis, while in everyday life it easily fades into the background. Through various biblical examples, this lesson shows that prayer is far more than simply expressing requests. It is a personal encounter with God that includes trust, honesty, surrender, and perseverance. Jesus Himself taught His disciples how they should pray and showed them that prayer grows out of a living relationship with the Father. This lesson invites us not only to understand prayer theoretically, but to integrate it practically and intentionally into everyday life.

๐ง๏ธ 7.1 ElijahโPraying in Crisis
God meets us even in moments of exhaustion
On Mount Carmel, Elijah experienced one of the greatest spiritual victories of his life. God visibly answered his prayer and revealed His power before all Israel. Yet shortly afterward, Elijah fell into fear, weariness, and deep discouragement. This story shows how quickly the human condition can changeโeven after great experiences of faith. What is remarkable is that God did not condemn Elijah, but met him with patience, calmness, and care. This time, God did not answer through fire or storm, but through a still, gentle voice. The lesson reminds us that God is present even when we are weak, exhausted, or emotionally overwhelmed.
โณ 7.2 When Prayers Seem Unanswered
Learning to trust even when Godโs answer takes time
Many people know the experience of praying for something for a long time and still not seeing a direct answer. Hannah is a powerful example of how persistent prayer and trust belong together. Although she initially received no answer, she did not stop praying and learned to continue trusting God. This lesson shows that Godโs silence does not mean that He does not hear or care. Often, God works according to a greater plan and answers in His own time and in His own way. Therefore, how we deal with seemingly unanswered prayers depends greatly on the picture we have of God. When we learn to trust Him even while waiting, our faith can become deeper and more stable.
๐คฒ 7.3 Jesus Teaches Us How to Pray
Prayer as an honest and personal relationship with God
In Jesusโ time, prayer had often become a public religious performance. Many people used long and impressive words in order to appear pious and gain the attention of others. Jesus presented a completely different understanding of prayer. He showed that true prayer does not depend on beautiful formulations, but on sincerity, honesty, and a personal relationship with God. In the Lordโs Prayer, Jesus teaches not only certain words, but an attitude of trust, reverence, and dependence on the Father in heaven. He combines praise, surrender, petition, forgiveness, and protection into a balanced prayer. This lesson reminds us that God is not looking for perfect religious performance, but for an open heart that speaks honestly with Him.
๐ถ 7.4 Praise, Confession, Requests, Thanksgiving
A balanced prayer brings us closer to God
Jesus and Daniel both show that prayer is far more than just a list of requests. In Daniel 9, we see a prayer full of reverence, humility, confession of sins, and trust in Godโs grace. Praise reminds us who God is and how great His love, faithfulness, and power are. Confession helps us become honest before God and let go of everything that burdens our relationship with Him. At the same time, we may openly bring our worries, needs, and challenges to God, trusting that He will guide us. Thanksgiving also changes our perspective because it makes us aware of how much God has already doneโeven in the small things of everyday life. This lesson shows that a balanced prayer shapes our hearts and deepens our relationship with God.
๐ญ 7.5 Other Questions About Prayer
Prayer does not change Godโbut it changes us
Many people wonder why we should pray at all if God already knows everything. The Bible and Ellen White both make it clear that prayer is not meant to inform God, but to bring us closer to Him. In prayer, we recognize our dependence on God and open our hearts to His work in our lives. Faith plays an important role in this, because trusting Godโs promises strengthens our relationship with Him and helps us continue even without visible answers. At the same time, this lesson reminds us that prayer should not only take place privately, but is also important in families, small groups, and churches. Furthermore, prayer includes not only speaking, but also listeningโespecially through Godโs Word, through which He speaks to us and transforms our lives.
๐ฅ 7.6 Summary
Prayer as a living connection with God in everyday life
This lesson shows that prayer is not intended only for special moments, but should be part of daily life. Through Elijah, Hannah, and the words of Jesus, it becomes clear that God is present both in crises and in times of waiting. Jesus taught that true prayer does not consist of outward religiosity, but of honesty, trust, and a personal relationship with the Father. At the same time, we learn that prayer includes more than requests: praise, confession of sins, thanksgiving, and intercession are also part of it. Even when prayers sometimes seem unanswered, we may trust that God sees the bigger picture and acts according to His perfect will. Ultimately, prayer changes not only our circumstances, but above all our hearts and our relationship with God.
