After the death of Ish-bosheth, the way was clear. The elders of Israel came to David at Hebron and recognized what had long been obvious:

A covenant was made – not only politically, but before God.
The coronation was a mighty moment. People from all the tribes gathered. Priests, soldiers, and the people stood together.
David, once a fugitive in caves, was now crowned king.
The anointing that Samuel had once performed in secret was now publicly confirmed.

David had not forced this moment.
