👑 1 Samuel 11 – The King’s First Victory
When God’s Spirit gives courage, enemies are defeated, and hearts are reconciled

🌐 Read online here

🔵 Introduction

After Saul’s anointing and public introduction, a crucial question hangs in the air: Will this new king truly be able to save Israel? There was no shortage of doubt—and no shortage of critics. But God Himself creates a situation in which Saul’s calling is clearly confirmed.

1 Samuel 11 shows how God raises up a deliverer through His Spirit—and how true leadership is revealed not in revenge, but in grace.

🟡 Commentary

The threat comes suddenly and brutally. Nahash, the king of the Ammonites, marches against Jabesh in Gilead. His demand is humiliating and cruel: he wants to gouge out the right eye of every man—as a sign of disgrace for all Israel. Fear spreads. Jabesh asks for time, sends messengers throughout the land, and desperately hopes for rescue.

When the news reaches Gibeah, the people break down in tears. Saul is just returning from the field, still an ordinary man behind the oxen. But when he hears what has happened, something decisive takes place: the Spirit of God comes upon him. Anger fills him—not from personal offense, but from holy indignation at injustice.

Saul acts decisively. He cuts up a pair of oxen and sends the pieces throughout all Israel with this message: Whoever does not go out after Saul and Samuel, the same will be done to his oxen. The fear of the Lord falls on the people—and Israel gathers as one.

At Bezek the men are counted: 330,000 warriors stand ready. The message to Jabesh is clear and hopeful: Tomorrow, when the sun grows hot, your deliverance will come. Joy fills the besieged people.

The next morning Saul attacks with wise strategy. In three divisions Israel’s army falls upon the Ammonite camp. The assault is crushing. The enemies are completely scattered—no two remain together. Israel is set free.

Now the emotions shift. The people remember those who had despised Saul. Revenge is in the air. But Saul shows true greatness: No one shall be put to death today, he says, for today the Lord has brought deliverance in Israel. He turns the focus away from himself—and toward God.

Samuel calls the people to Gilgal. There the kingship is renewed; sacrifices are offered, peace offerings before the Lord. Fear becomes joy, doubt becomes certainty. Saul and all Israel celebrate—not themselves, but God’s salvation.

God confirms calling through responsibility, not through titles. True victory is shown not only in battle, but also in how we treat our critics.
Saul starts strong: filled with the Spirit of God, courageous in action, and generous in victory. This chapter reminds us: when God works, He alone deserves the glory—and our hearts must remain free from retaliation.

“Firstfruits, Sacrifice, and Gratitude”
How giving kept faith alive

🔵 Introduction

Even before the tithe was calculated, Israel brought God the first and the best. This order shaped a people who lived not from lack, but from trust.

══════════════════════════

🟡 Commentary

The Israelites did not wait until they had “enough.” The firstfruits belonged to God—the first produce of the harvest, the first wool, the first oil, the first animal. Even the firstborn son was dedicated to God and redeemed through a ransom.

When an Israelite came to the tabernacle with firstfruits, it was not a quiet act. He publicly confessed God’s deeds: deliverance from Egypt, guidance through the wilderness, and the gift of the land. Every offering was accompanied by remembrance, gratitude, and praise.

In this way, God connected giving with history. Whoever gave remembered that rain, sun, growth, and life itself were gifts from God. The poor were especially at the center of this order—no one was to be forgotten.

Giving was not a heartless duty. It was a spiritual practice that deepened gratitude and exposed selfishness.

🟢 Summary

The system of firstfruits and sacrifices kept the people aware that God is the source of all life and all provision.

📢 Message for Us Today

Gratitude is shown not only in words, but in actions. Whoever honors God first learns to live with trust instead of fear.
