π± GROWING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
πΏ Lesson 2: To Know God
π 2.2 God is holy
Purity that makes trust possible
π 1. Introduction β An unfamiliar reality
When was the last time you thought about βholinessβ?
In our daily lives, this word hardly appears. We talk about success, feelings, or problemsβbut rarely about holiness.
It may even seem strange or distant.
But that is exactly the problem:
If we do not understand holiness, we do not truly understand God.
Because the Bible shows:
Holiness is not just one attribute of Godβit is at the center of His being.
π 2. The biblical foundation β Godβs nature
The Bible repeatedly describes God as holy.
π βNo one is holy like the LORDβ (1 Samuel 2:2)
π βBe holy, because I am holyβ (Leviticus 20:26)
Holiness means:
God is completely pure, separated from all evil, and absolutely good.
He is not partially goodβbut entirely.
This applies to everything:
- His love
- His thoughts
- His decisions
- His power
π Everything about God is completely good.
π 3. Connection to today
Today, God is often presented in a one-sided way:
either only as lovingβor only as strict.
But without holiness, a distorted picture emerges.
A God without holiness would be:
- unpredictable
- possibly unjust
- perhaps even dangerous
And that is exactly why many people struggle with God:
not because He is holyβ
but because they misunderstand His holiness.
π‘ 4. Central message of the lesson
The central truth is:
π Godβs holiness makes Him trustworthy.
Because He is completely good,
we can approach Him without fear.
His love is pure.
His power is safe.
His decisions are just.
Holiness is not distanceβ
it is the guarantee that God never acts wrongly.
βοΈ 5. Theological focus
At the core is a crucial truth:
π Godβs holiness is the foundation of everything He is and does.
Without holiness, His attributes would be dangerous.
An all-powerful God without holiness could destroy.
An all-knowing God without holiness could manipulate.
A loving God without holiness could be selfish.
But the Bible shows:
all of Godβs attributes are shaped by His holiness.
π His love is holy β free from selfishness
π His justice is holy β perfectly fair
π His power is holy β never abusive
This means:
holiness is not just one attributeβ
it is the βfoundationβ of Godβs character.
At the same time, a tension appears:
When people encounter God, they react with awe, fear, or even collapse.
Why?
π Because Godβs holiness reveals our unholiness.
Moses takes off his shoes.
Isaiah cries, βWoe to me!β
John falls as though dead.
This shows:
holiness is not only beautifulβ
it is also confronting.
But here lies the gospel:
π God does not remain distant.
He comes near to usβdespite our unholiness.
Not because He gives up His holiness,
but because He makes a way to transform us.
Holiness separatesβ
but Godβs grace bridges that separation.
π 6. Bible texts explained
- Leviticus 20:26 shows:
God is holyβand calls us into that holiness. - 1 Samuel 2:2 makes it clear:
There is no one like GodβHis holiness is unique.
Isaiah 57:15 connects two seeming opposites:
The High and Exalted One dwells with the lowly.
π Holiness does not mean distanceβ
but also closeness to the humble.
Ezekiel 38:23 shows:
God reveals His holiness before the world.
In Revelation 4:8 we see the center of heaven:
βHoly, holy, holyβ¦β
π Holiness is what defines God at His deepest core.
π§ 7. Application in daily life
This lesson confronts us with a personal question:
How do I respond to Godβs holiness?
In practical terms, this means:
Approach God with reverenceβnot superficially
Examine my life in the light of His purity
Do not trivialize sin
Seek Godβs presenceβdespite my imperfection
It is not about being perfectβ
but about living honestly before a holy God.
β 8. Reflection question
Do I see Godβs holiness as something threateningβ
or as the foundation of trust?
How does my life change
when I realize that God is completely good?
π 9. Final thought
Godβs holiness shows us two things at the same time:
π how great the distance between us and Him is
π and how incredible His love is that overcomes that distance
He is completely pureβ
and yet He invites us to come to Him.
Not because we are holy,
but because He is.
And that is exactly where our hope lies.
