🐏 Judges 20 – A sad conflict between brothers
🔥 How Israel fights for justice – and almost forgets what love is
🌼 Introduction
Sometimes people argue so badly that they forget they actually belong together.
That is what happened to the tribes of Israel in Chapter 20.
They wanted to do what was right—but in the end, everyone was hurt.
Here we learn how important it is to ask God first before we act …
and how deeply conflict can wound hearts.
📖 The Bible story
Israel is in turmoil.
All the tribes come together—hundreds of thousands of men, as many as the sand by the sea.
They are angry, sad, and disappointed 😔.
Something terrible had happened in the tribe of Benjamin (Chapter 19)—
so terrible that all Israel said:
“That must never happen again! We must act!”
🔥 They wanted justice—and right away.
They called the tribe of Benjamin and said:
“Hand over the men who did this evil!
They must be punished!”
But Benjamin said NO.
They protected the guilty men and stood against the other tribes.
Suddenly brothers were standing against brothers.
Twelve tribes against one.
One people—torn apart.
Israel asked God:
“Should we fight?”
God said:
“Yes—go up.”
And so a very sad war began.
Israel fought hard—but on the first day they lost.
Many men fell.
Tears. Wounded hearts 💔.
They asked God again.
Once more He said:
“Fight—I am with you.”
But even on the second day they lost.
More pain.
More sorrow.
The Israelites sat before the sanctuary, crying loudly and fasting 😢.
They brought offerings.
This time they asked humbly:
“Lord, should we fight again?
Or should we stop?”
And at last God said:
“Tomorrow I will give you the victory.”
On the third day Israel attacked differently—
with a plan, not just strength.
At first Benjamin seemed strong—
but then everything changed.
In the end, Israel won.
But the victory did not feel good.
Because Benjamin lay broken, and Israel realized:
“We have struck our own brother …”
Silence.
Sadness spread like dark clouds.
Everyone sat there—tired, dusty, with aching hearts.
The people understood:
⚠ Justice without love can destroy.
💔 Conflict can tear families apart.
🌿 God wants healing—not victory at any price.
And so the chapter ends—heavy, but important.
It prepares the way for Chapter 21, where Israel tries to make things right again.
