👑 The King is coming soon – Hope beyond the end
📅 January 27 — The Latter Rain and the Revival of God’s People
Monthly theme: The Blessed Hope — Living in Expectation
Year theme 2026: “Soon the King Is Coming — Hope Beyond the End”
📖 Central Bible Text of the Day
“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord.
See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth,
being patient about it, until it receives the early rain and the latter rain.”
— James 5:7
🌅 Devotional for the Day
The latter rain is one of the most glorious promises of the Bible.
It symbolizes the final outpouring of the Holy Spirit,
which prepares the church for the return of Christ.
Just as the early rain came at the time of sowing
to make the seed sprout,
so the latter rain comes
to bring the fruit to full maturity.
“Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God;
for He has given you the former rain faithfully,
and He will cause the rain to come down for you—
the former rain, and the latter rain as before.”
— Joel 2:23
The early rain fell at Pentecost,
when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples with power.
The latter rain will fall at the end of time
to complete God’s work on earth.
✨ The Purpose of the Latter Rain
Ellen G. White explains:
“The latter rain will be given to prepare the harvest of the earth for the coming of Christ.
It gives the church power to finish God’s work in perfection.”
(Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 21)
The latter rain is not an emotional experience,
but spiritual maturity.
It prepares God’s people
to reveal Christ’s character to the world.
It is the final divine influence
that strengthens people for the seal of God.
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;
and you shall be witnesses to Me.”
— Acts 1:8
The power of the latter rain is the power for sanctification and witness.
🌿 How Does the Latter Rain Come?
The Holy Spirit does not fall on the indifferent,
but on those who are prepared—
on those who hunger for God.
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face,
and turn from their wicked ways,
then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
— 2 Chronicles 7:14
Ellen White wrote:
“Many will fail of receiving the latter rain,
because they do not seek it.
They are satisfied with a superficial piety
and forget that only those
who daily plead for renewal will receive it.”
(Last Day Events, p. 192)
Preparation for the latter rain is not activism,
but heart work—
repentance, humility, reconciliation,
and a life of complete surrender to Christ.
🕊️ The Work of the Spirit in the Church
When the latter rain falls,
there will be a deep revival.
God’s people will act in unity, purity, and power.
Preachers and laypeople alike will be filled
with divine wisdom and courage.
“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the LORD of hosts.
— Zechariah 4:6
Ellen White wrote:
“Under the power of the latter rain thousands will accept the truth
that they previously rejected.
Hearts will be moved by the influence of the Holy Spirit,
and the work of the gospel will be finished in great glory.”
(The Great Controversy, p. 612)
Then the “loud cry” (Revelation 18)
will illuminate the earth with mighty power.
🌄 Personal Preparation
The latter rain falls on purified hearts.
We cannot force it,
but we can be ready to receive it.
As Elijah prepared for the rain (1 Kings 18:42),
so we too should persevere in prayer and trust God.
Ellen White encourages:
“We should daily look to heaven
and in quiet expectation wait for the outpouring of the Spirit,
ready to be shaped by the Lord.”
(Maranatha, p. 219)
Now is the time
to separate from everything that dulls the Spirit,
and to surrender completely to God what holds us captive.
🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father,
send Your latter rain upon Your waiting people.
Cleanse my heart from all pride and self-will.
Give me the spirit of humility,
the spirit of prayer and surrender.
Let me be ready
when Your Spirit is poured out in fullness,
so that Your work may be finished and Your name glorified.
Amen.
💭 Thought for the Day
“The latter rain will not come
to replace our inactivity,
but to finish the work
that the early rain began.”
— Ellen G. White, Maranatha, p. 220
💡 Personal Application
-
Read Joel 2:23–32 and Acts 2.
Ask God to show you personally the meaning of the latter rain. -
Pray: “Lord, prepare my heart for the latter rain.”
-
Practical:
Promote unity and reconciliation today with someone
you have been in conflict with—
that opens heaven over you.
🌺 Closing Verse
“So let us know, let us press on to know the Lord.
His going forth is as sure as the dawn;
He will come to us like the rain,
like the latter rain that waters the earth.”
— Hosea 6:3
