🌱 GROWING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

📖 Lesson 4: The Role of the Bible

📘 4.5 State of the Heart

The heart determines what we understand

📖 1. Introduction – A Personal Question

With what attitude do you open the Bible?

Do you come to learn – or to be confirmed?

Often the problem is not in the Bible, but in our hearts. Because two people can read the same text and take completely different things from it. The difference is not in the Word — but in the condition of the heart.

📜 2. The Biblical Foundation – Spiritual Understanding

  1. 1 Corinthians 2:14 makes it clear that a natural person does not understand spiritual things. He lacks spiritual discernment.

This means: understanding the Bible is not only a matter of intellect, but of inner openness.

  1. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 also shows that God’s Word works in us when we accept it in faith — not as a human word, but as the Word of God.

👉 Faith and attitude determine whether the Word works.

🌍 3. Connection to Today

Today it is normal to question information critically. This is generally good — but it can also lead us to place ourselves above what we read.

This attitude can also affect the Bible. One reads, analyzes, evaluates — but no longer allows oneself to be changed.

The result: much knowledge, but little spiritual transformation.

💡 4. Central Message of the Lesson

The central message is:

👉 God’s Word only works in an open and humble heart.

It is not reading alone that changes us — but the attitude with which we read.

✝️ 5. Theological Focus

At the center of this lesson is the relationship between the human heart and the working of God’s Word.

The Bible makes it clear that spiritual understanding does not arise automatically. It is not only an intellectual ability, but a spiritual process. Human beings are not naturally neutral, but influenced by sin. This affects their thinking, their perception, and their willingness to accept truth.

  1. 1 Corinthians 2:14 shows that the natural person cannot grasp spiritual things because the foundation is missing: openness to the Spirit of God. This means that true understanding is always connected to an inner orientation.

A decisive point is faith. God’s Word does not work independently of a person’s attitude, but in connection with trust. Whoever believes opens themselves to God’s work. Whoever remains closed will experience little change.

Another important aspect is the role of the Holy Spirit. He is the one who makes the Word alive and applies it to the heart. Without this work, the Bible remains a text — with it, it becomes God’s personal address.

At the same time, the Bible shows that growth often happens step by step. Change is not always immediately visible, but develops over time. Yet it will not fail to occur if the heart is open.

👉 Theologically decisive:
It is not the amount of knowledge that determines spiritual growth — but the openness of the heart toward God.

📖 6. Bible Texts Explained

  1. 1 Corinthians 2:14 describes the “natural person” who does not understand spiritual things. This does not mean they are not intelligent, but that they lack spiritual perspective.
  2. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 shows that God’s Word becomes effective when it is accepted in faith. It is not only about hearing, but about trusting.

Mark 9:24 shows that even weak faith is sufficient if it is sincere. God can grow that faith.

Luke 17:6 shows that even small faith can have great impact. What matters is not the size, but the authenticity.

  1. 2 Timothy 3:15 connects God’s Word with salvation. It not only leads to knowledge, but to a new life.

👉 In summary:
God’s Word works where there is faith, openness, and willingness to change.

🔧 7. Application in Daily Life

This lesson challenges us to consciously examine our attitude.

Practically, this can mean:

  • praying intentionally before reading
  • being open to correction
  • questioning your own opinions
  • taking God’s Word seriously

It is not about understanding everything immediately, but being willing to be guided.

8. Reflection Question

Do I come to the Bible with an open heart — or do I only bring my own ideas?

🌟 9. Final Thought

God’s Word is clear.

The decisive question is not whether it speaks —
but whether we are willing to listen.

Because:

👉 An open heart understands more than a clever mind without humility.
