✉️ CHRIST IN PHILIPPIANS AND COLOSSIANS

Lesson 10 : Complete in Christ

📘 10.6 Summary

✨ Complete in Christ – His Fullness Is Sufficient

🟦 Introduction

The message of the Letter to the Colossians is one of the clearest and most powerful statements in the New Testament about the completeness of our salvation in Christ.

Paul wrote to a church that believed, but was under the influence of various religious and philosophical currents. Some wanted to supplement faith with human wisdom, others with ceremonial regulations or strict religious rules. But Paul makes it clear: Christ needs no supplement.

In Him all the treasures of wisdom are hidden.
In Him we are rooted and grow.
Through Him our guilt was nailed to the cross.
He is the substance, while many other things were only shadows.
And He frees us from human commandments that make the gospel a burden.

The great question of this lesson therefore is:

If Christ is truly enough – why do people keep trying to add something to Him?

📖 Bible Study

Colossians 2 – Christ as the Center of Faith

1. Christ – Source of All Wisdom (Col 2:1–5)

Paul speaks about his inner “struggle” for the church. This struggle was not an external conflict, but a spiritual effort in prayer and proclamation. His goal was that the believers would be strengthened and united in love.

The Greek word paraklēthōsin means “encouraged, strengthened, comforted.” Paul knew that a church that is inwardly strengthened and united in love is less vulnerable to false teachings.

He also emphasizes:

“In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Col 2:3)

With this, Paul contradicts the Gnostic way of thinking of that time, which claimed that there were secret higher forms of knowledge. Paul says instead: The highest knowledge is a person – Christ Himself.

2. Rooted and Growing (Col 2:6–7)

Paul uses two images:

  • a tree that is rooted

  • a building that is being built

Both images show stability and growth.

A tree grows healthy only when its roots are deep. In the same way, a Christian grows spiritually only when he is firmly grounded in Christ.

The roots lie hidden — yet they determine stability in the storm.

Therefore Paul says:

“As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.”

This means: Faith does not only begin with Christ — it remains in Christ.

3. The Record of Debt on the Cross (Col 2:11–15)

Paul speaks about a “record of debt” that was nailed to the cross.

In the historical context, a record of debt was a document that recorded the debts or accusations against a person.

The image shows:

  • Our sins stood against us.

  • Christ removed this accusation.

  • At the cross the guilt was erased.

Paul also speaks about the “circumcision of the heart.” By this he means an inner spiritual transformation, not an external ritual.

Baptism symbolizes this process:

  • death of the old life

  • burial with Christ

  • resurrection to a new life

The cross therefore is not only a sign of suffering — but a triumph over sin and powers.

4. Shadow and Reality (Col 2:16–19)

Paul mentions several Jewish practices:

  • food and drink offerings

  • festivals

  • new moons

  • Sabbaths in the ceremonial sense

These things were part of the Old Testament sanctuary service and pointed to Christ.

Paul calls them “shadows.”

A shadow exists only because a reality stands behind it.

The reality is Christ.

This does not mean that God’s moral law was abolished, but that the symbolic regulations found their fulfillment.

5. Warning Against Human Commandments (Col 2:20–23)

Paul warns against religious regulations such as:

“Do not touch this!”
“Do not taste that!”

Such rules may appear strict outwardly and create an impression of piety. But Paul says they have no power to change the heart.

Real transformation does not come through rules, but through a living relationship with Christ.

  2. Spiritual growth arises from being rooted in Christ.

  3. The cross removes our guilt.

  4. Ceremonial shadows have found their fulfillment.

  5. Human commandments cannot change the heart.

  6. Salvation is a gift, not an achievement.

🛠️ Application in Daily Life

This lesson challenges us to examine our own life of faith.

Questions for self-reflection:

  • Do I truly trust in Christ alone?

  • Do I seek security in rules or traditions?

  • Am I inwardly rooted or only outwardly religious?

Practically this means:

  • spending time in the Word of God

  • seeking Christ in prayer

  • not judging others too quickly

  • growing in love and humility

A Christian does not live under religious pressure, but out of gratitude for the finished work of Jesus.

Conclusion

The Letter to the Colossians shows a clear truth:

Christ is enough.

He is:

  • our wisdom

  • our foundation

  • our redeemer

  • our freedom

Whoever is rooted in Christ needs no additions — because in Him we already have everything necessary for life and godliness.

💭 Thought of the Day

If Christ truly is our foundation, we need no additions — only deeper roots.

✍️ Illustration – The Rock Above the Abyss

A vision about truth, freedom, and the foundation of faith

Part 1 – The Search

Berlin, 2035.

David was a young theology student preparing a Sabbath School lesson on the Letter to the Colossians.

But the more he read, the more questions arose.

Some theologians said:

“The law has been abolished.”

Others claimed:

“All the old regulations must be kept again.”

And still others explained:

“The Bible must be interpreted in a modern way.”

David felt an inner unrest.

One evening he prayed:

“Lord, show me what truly holds.”

Part 2 – The Landscape of Decisions

During the night David had a dream.

He stood on a wide plain. In front of him opened a huge canyon.

On the left he saw a bridge made of glass. People walked across it and discussed new interpretations of the Bible.

But with every step cracks appeared in the glass.

On the right he saw a massive wall made of golden rules and religious regulations.

People carried heavy burdens and tried to climb the wall.

But they hardly moved forward.

Part 3 – The Shining Rock

In the middle rose a mighty rock.

On it stood a cross.

A beam of light fell from heaven directly onto the cross.

From the rock a narrow path of light led across the abyss.

A voice said:

“This path holds, because it was not built by humans.”

David understood:

The rock was Christ.

Part 4 – The Broken Chains

At the foot of the cross lay broken chains.

An old document — a record of debt — was torn apart.

The voice spoke again:

“Your guilt is defeated.
Not through your performance —
but through My sacrifice.”

David knelt down.

For the first time he felt a deep certainty.

Part 5 – The Morning

David awoke.

The sun was just rising.

He opened his Bible and read Colossians 2:6:

“As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.”

Suddenly he understood:

Faith does not need complicated additions.

It needs a firm foundation.

📌 Final Thoughts on the Story

The vision reminds us of a central truth:

The Christian faith always stands between two dangers:

  • legalism

  • relativism

But the safe path lies in the middle:

Christ Himself.

He is the rock above every abyss.

And whoever stands on this rock will remain standing even in the storm.
