😢 2 Samuel Chapter 18 – Absalom’s End

✨ When Your Own Son Becomes the Enemy

🌅 Introduction

Imagine your own son becoming your enemy.
He wants to take your place, drive you away – or even kill you.
What would you do?

David is in exactly such a situation.
His son Absalom has made himself king,
and the people are divided.

Now the battle begins.
But David’s heart remains that of a father.

📖 The Biblical Story

David had fled with his men.
They had gathered in the city of Mahanaim.
But now it became clear: a battle could not be avoided.

Absalom had gathered a great army,
and he marched with full force against his father.

🧭 Three Armies – One Command

David counted his men and divided them into three groups.
Joab received the first army,
Abishai the second,
Ittai the third.

David wanted to fight himself.
But the men said:
“If they kill you, everything is lost! Stay here in the city.”

David listened to them.
But before the armies left,
he gave a serious command:

“Deal gently with the young man Absalom –
for my sake.”

Everyone heard it.
Everyone knew: David wanted
his son to be unharmed.

🌳 The Forest Devours the Army

The battle took place in a dense forest.
It was difficult to fight there.
The soldiers stumbled, got lost –
and many died not by the sword,
but because of the dangers of the forest itself.

David’s men won the battle.
But another message was even more important.

😨 Absalom’s Fate

Absalom rode through the forest on a mule.
His long, beautiful hair – which he was so proud of –
got caught in the branches of a large oak tree.

The mule kept running,
but Absalom was left hanging helplessly in the tree.

A soldier saw him
and ran to Joab.

“I saw Absalom – he is hanging in the tree!”

Joab was determined.
Even though David had ordered to spare Absalom,
Joab took three spears and thrust them into Absalom’s heart.

So the young man died,
who wanted to be king –
but had left God’s path.

🏃 The Messengers

Two men ran to David,
to bring him the news:
“We have won the victory!”

David immediately asked:

“Is my son well?”

At first, no one wanted to say it.
But soon David learned the truth:
Absalom was dead.

😭 David’s Pain

David went into his room.
He wept – loudly and heartbreakingly:

“My son Absalom!
My son, my son Absalom!
Oh, that I had died instead of you!”

His heart was broken.
Not because he had won the war.
But because his son was lost.

🟣 Summary

David wins – but the victory does not make him happy.
His son Absalom dies, even though David wanted to protect him.
Joab acts harshly,
and David is left with a broken heart.

Sometimes a victory brings no joy – only tears.

💚 Message for Children Today

David shows us
that love can be stronger than power.
Even though Absalom turned against him,
in David’s eyes he was still his child.

David could have said:
“He got what he deserved!”
But he didn’t.

Maybe you have also experienced
that someone was against you –
and you could have easily fought back.
But God shows us:
forgiveness, compassion, and a gentle heart are stronger than revenge.
