๐Ÿ  2 Samuel Chapter 14 โ€“ Absalom Is Allowed to Return

โœจ When a Father Misses His Son โ€“ but Cannot Show It

๐ŸŒ… Introduction

Have you ever had such a big argument with someone that you stopped talking to each other?
And even though you were sad, you still waited for the other person to take the first step?

That is exactly what this story is about.
A father and a son are separated.
But in their hearts, both long for things to be made right again.
They just do not know how.

๐Ÿ“– The Biblical Story

Absalom had not been home for years.
After he killed his brother Amnon, he fled.
He lived far away โ€“ in a foreign land โ€“
and no longer saw his father David.

David was deeply hurt by what had happened.
But even deeper inside him:
He missed his son.
He often thought about Absalom,
wondered how he was doing,
but โ€ฆ he stayed silent.

Joab, the commander of the kingโ€™s army, saw this.
He sensed: David loves his son โ€“
but he does not know how to draw close to him again.
So Joab made a plan.

He brought a wise woman from Tekoa โ€“
someone who could tell stories well.
She was to visit David and make him think through a story.

The woman came into the palace and said:

โ€œMy king, I am a widow.
I had two sons.
They fought in the field,
and one killed the other.

Now the people also want to kill the second son โ€“
but he is all I have left.โ€

David was shaken.
โ€œNo,โ€ he said, โ€œno one shall lay a hand on your son.
I will make sure that he is safe.โ€

Then the woman looked steadily at David.
And said gently:
โ€œThen why are you not willing to bring back your own son?
God wants us to forgive people.
So why should your son Absalom remain banished?โ€

David understood.
He realized that Joab was behind the story.
But he was not angry.
Because his heart had been moved.

He called Joab to him and said:
โ€œGo and bring Absalom back.โ€

Joab was very glad.
He set out โ€“ and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.

But David was still not completely ready.
He said:
โ€œHe may live in the city โ€“ but I do not want to see him.โ€

For two years Absalom lived in Jerusalem,
without meeting his father even once.
Absalom was disappointed.
He felt not truly accepted.

He tried to get Joab to arrange a meeting with the king โ€“
but Joab did not respond.

So Absalom had Joabโ€™s field set on fire!
Yes, really โ€“ a drastic step.

When Joab came to him angrily, Absalom simply said:
โ€œI want to speak with my father at last!
If I have done something wrong, let him punish me โ€“
but this silence cannot go on!โ€

So Joab went to David.
And at last David called for his son.

When Absalom came, it was quiet.
Then he bowed down.

David stood up, went to him โ€“
and kissed him.
A sign that said:
โ€œI forgive you. You are my son again.โ€
