🤝 2 Samuel Chapter 3 – When Enemies Change

✨ Why patience, truth, and forgiveness are not easy – but important

🌅 Introduction

Imagine that you want to do the right thing – but many around you are fighting, lying, or thinking only of themselves.
That was how it was for David during this time.

He was king over Judah – but the rest of Israel still followed another king, Saul’s son.
And the war between the two sides had already lasted a long time.
What should David do?

Give up? Strike back?
No. He remained patient.
Because he knew: God Himself brings everything about in His time.

📖 The Biblical Story

David was by now firmly established as king in Hebron – at least over the tribe of Judah.
The people there respected him, and he ruled with patience and wisdom.
But the rest of the people of Israel still followed another king: Ish-Bosheth, one of Saul’s sons.
The war between the two sides was not over. It was a long conflict – not always loud, but full of tension.

Even so, David did not allow himself to be drawn into hatred.
He lived with his family in Hebron. There sons were also born to him. Meanwhile, he led his people calmly and with his eyes on God’s will.

But on the other side there was a man named Abner.
He was Ish-Bosheth’s commander – a strong and experienced man. He had already fought under Saul and was a true warrior.
But over time something changed in Abner.
He saw how strong David was becoming. He recognized that God’s hand was upon David. And at some point he had enough of the injustice and the confusion.

But what really changed everything was an argument.
Ish-Bosheth accused Abner – without reason.
Abner was furious. He had served faithfully for years – and now he was supposed to justify himself?
Then he said: “If you trust me so little, then I am finished with you. I will help David become king over all Israel – just as God wants!”

And he meant it seriously.

Abner sent messengers to David in Hebron.
“I want to make peace,” he had them say.
“I want to support you. I will bring the people over to your side.”

David was cautious, but open.
He remembered everything that had happened before.
But he knew: if God changes hearts, then one should not cling to the past.

So David invited Abner. The two men – once enemies – now sat across from each other.
They talked for a long time. And they understood each other.
At the end David said: “Go in peace. I am ready.”

But not everyone was so ready.

Joab, David’s commander, had not been involved in that meeting.
When he heard about it, he became angry.
He remembered how Abner had killed his brother Asahel – in battle.
Joab could not forget. He did not want reconciliation.
He wanted revenge.

Without David’s permission, Joab had Abner called back.
And then something terrible happened:
Joab killed Abner in secret – not on the battlefield, but by treachery.

When David heard of it, he was horrified.
He said out loud: “I had nothing to do with this murder! Joab acted on his own!”

And then David did something that everyone saw:
He had Abner buried publicly with honor.
He wore mourning clothes, wept, fasted – and showed the whole people:
“I wanted peace.”

The people understood.
They saw that David was just.
He was not a king who ruled with hatred.
But one who sought peace and truth – even when it was hard.

🟣 Summary

David grows stronger and stronger, although the conflict between him and Saul’s house continues.
Abner, Saul’s commander, unexpectedly changes sides and wants to help David.
But Joab, David’s commander, kills Abner out of revenge.
David is horrified and shows publicly that he wanted peace.
He mourns for Abner – even though he had once been his enemy.

💚 Message for Children Today

It is easy to stay angry with an enemy.
But it is much harder – and stronger – to forgive someone.
David could have been angry.
But he was ready for reconciliation.
He did not think about revenge, but about justice.

Not everyone in your life will think that way.
But you may choose which side you stand on:
Revenge or peace?

💭 Reflection Prompt

🕊️ What would you have done in David’s place when Abner suddenly wanted peace?
⚔️ Is it sometimes hard to forgive others?
👀 Do you know someone with whom you should make peace?
