Series: GROWING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD with Pastor Mark Finley

🌄 Lesson 3: Pride Versus Humility
✨ A battle in every human heart

Introduction:

Pride and humility are two opposing paths that shape our lives and our relationship with God. Often we do not recognize pride immediately, because it appears subtly in our thinking and behavior. The Bible makes it clear that pride distances us from God, while humility draws us closer to Him. This lesson invites us to honestly examine our own hearts and recognize our true condition. Through biblical examples, we learn how dangerous pride can be and how liberating true humility is. In the end, it is about consciously deciding which path we want to follow—the path of self or the path with God.

⚠️ 3.1 The Tight Fingers of Pride
When the heart moves away from God

Pride often begins invisibly in the heart rather than in outward behavior. It shows itself when a person places themselves at the center and loses sight of God. Already in Lucifer we see that pride leads to separation from God. 1 John 2:16 describes how pride is closely connected to the desires of this world. However, our value does not come from what we are or what we do, but only from God. Therefore, it is essential to examine our hearts and replace pride with humility.

🪞 3.2 Know Yourself
True self-knowledge begins before God

The story of the two men shows a strong contrast between pride and humility. While one exalts himself, the other honestly recognizes his sin and his dependence on God. Jesus makes it clear that outward religiosity does not count, but a humble heart. True self-knowledge arises when we look at Christ and recognize our condition in the light of His holiness. God’s grace is for those who do not justify themselves, but who need Him. Therefore, real change begins where we become honest before God.

🐑 3.3 Moses, Humble Servant
True greatness is shown in humility

Moses had every opportunity for a life full of power and wealth, yet he consciously chose God’s path. His decision shows that true values are not found in earthly things, but in a relationship with God. Through mistakes and wilderness experiences, Moses learned not to trust himself but to rely completely on God. These processes shaped his character and led to genuine humility. The Bible ultimately describes him as the most humble man of his time. His life shows that God can use those who are willing to fully submit to Him.

👑 3.4 The Greatest Offense
True greatness is shown in serving

Even the disciples of Jesus struggled with the desire to be greater than others. Despite their closeness to Jesus, it becomes clear how deeply rooted pride is in the human heart. Jesus turned this thinking upside down by explaining that true greatness lies in serving, not in ruling. Pride is especially offensive to God because it separates us from Him and blinds us to our true condition. Often we do not recognize our own pride, which makes it even more dangerous. Therefore, real change begins when we allow God to examine our hearts and grant us humility.

✝️ 3.5 Look at Him
Humility grows by looking at Christ

Jesus Himself is the perfect example of humility, because although He was everything, He lived as a servant among people. His words and His life show that true greatness lies in giving, not in receiving. When we look at Him, we not only see His love, but also our own pride and need. Philippians 2 makes it clear that we should have the same attitude of humility as Christ. The more we look at Jesus, the less important our own self becomes. Real change begins when we turn our eyes away from ourselves and fix them completely on Him.

✨ 3.6 Summary
The path from pride to humility

This lesson shows how deeply pride is rooted in the human heart and how easily it influences our relationship with God. From Lucifer to the disciples, we see that pride always leads to self-centeredness and ultimately to separation from God. At the same time, the Bible reveals that true greatness does not lie in exalting oneself, but in humility and dependence on God. In Moses and especially in Jesus, we see what true humility looks like—a life of service and surrender. When we look to Christ, we become aware of our own condition and our hearts can be transformed. Growth in faith begins when we let go of our pride and learn to live humbly with God.
