👑 1 Samuel 2 – God lifts up the humble and brings down the proud
✨ Hannah’s song of praise, the fall of Eli’s sons, and the promised renewal of the priesthood
🌐 Read online here
🔵 Introduction
1 Samuel 2 is a chapter full of contrasts:
Hannah’s song exalts God for His rule, His reversals, and His justice.
Yet in the very same sanctuary where Hannah rejoices, the sons of Eli corrupt God’s sacrifice.
While Samuel grows, the corruption of Israel’s spiritual leaders also grows.
This chapter powerfully reveals the truth of Hannah’s song itself:
God brings down the proud and lifts up the humble.
It is a chapter that describes the condition of Israel — and at the same time announces God’s coming intervention.

🟡 Commentary
It is a new day in Shiloh. Hannah stands in the sanctuary, this time not with tears, but with a song. It is a song full of joy, strength, and deep theological insight. Her heart, once heavy, is now overflowing with praise.
Her words reach far beyond her personal story. She speaks of God’s character, His power, His unique holiness. The world may appear chaotic — but God sits on the throne.
As Hannah sings, she prepares her son to serve in the sanctuary. The boy Samuel wears a small linen robe — a sign of his special dedication. Each year, when Hannah comes on the pilgrimage to offer sacrifices, she makes him a new one. Every garment is a reminder: this son belongs to God.
But in the same sanctuary, very different things are happening. Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, wear priestly garments, but not the weight of the priestly calling. They are arrogant, violent, and greedy. They despise the sacrifices, tear meat from the pots before God receives His portion, and threaten those who bring offerings.
The sanctuary — the place of prayer — is permeated by abuse of power.
Rumors spread. People lose respect for God’s sacrifice.
Eli hears about it. He is old. He rebukes his sons — but he does not stop them.
And finally, God intervenes.
A “man of God” — anonymous, identified only as a messenger of the LORD — comes to Eli and reminds him of the calling of his house:
God once chose his line for priestly service. But now Eli’s family has despised the holy offerings. Eli honored his sons more than God.
Therefore, God announces judgment:
His house will fall. His line will be broken. His descendants will not grow old. The day will come when both sons will die on the same day.
Yet the crisis is not without hope.
God promises:
“I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest.”
Someone who will act according to God’s heart.
A new beginning. A spiritual renewal.
Meanwhile, Samuel continues to grow — outwardly and inwardly.
He is the quiet contrast in the midst of loud decay.
God shapes him silently — as an answer to Hannah’s faithfulness, as a counterpoint to Eli’s sons, and as preparation for a new era in Israel.

📢 Message for us today
1️⃣ God looks at the heart and attitude, not position or title
Hophni and Phinehas wore holy garments — but had unholy hearts.
Samuel wore a small robe — but carried a great calling.
2️⃣ God’s justice works over time — but irresistibly
Hannah’s song is a mirror for all Israel:
God lifts up the lowly, but resists the proud.
3️⃣ God acts when spiritual leaders fail
Eli’s failure shows:
Passivity can be just as destructive as open sin.
Yet God’s plan does not stop.
4️⃣ Faithfulness in small things opens the door to God’s great work
Samuel performs simple tasks — but God is shaping him into a great prophet.
5️⃣ God’s answer can be judgment and hope at the same time
While one priestly line ends, God prepares a new one.
God closes doors — to open better ones.

💬 Thought for reflection
Where in my life do I see more of Eli’s heart — and where the heart of Hannah or Samuel?
God does not call us to outward religion, but to inward devotion.
Not to titles, but to faithfulness.
Not to our own honor, but to His.

Caleb’s faith – An inheritance despite giants
Trust that does not grow old – How Caleb still fought and conquered at the age of 85
──────────────────────────
🔵 Introduction
Caleb is a remarkable man. While an entire nation perished in the wilderness, he held firmly to the word of God. Decades later, he boldly claims the inheritance that was promised to him — a place inhabited by giants.
══════════════════════════
🟡 Commentary
After the land was divided, Caleb comes to Joshua. He recalls the event from more than 40 years earlier: as a spy, he was one of the few who believed that God would give His people victory despite powerful enemies. The reward: a personal promise of Hebron.
Now, at 85 years old, Caleb’s eyes are not tired and his heart is not fearful. Instead of choosing comfortable land, he asks for Hebron — the territory of the Anakites, feared giants. Not out of pride, but because he wants to honor God. And God rewards his faith. Hebron is given to him — and he drives out the giants who had paralyzed others.

🟢 Summary
Caleb receives what he trusted God for over decades — not because it was easy, but because God is faithful. He is a living picture of a life strong in faith, even in old age.
