⛪ Lesson 13 : Standing in All the Will of God
📘 13.4 Living in This World but Not of It
⚖️ Who really owns my heart?
📖 1. Introduction – A situation from everyday life
There are decisions in life that do not seem big at first, but in the long run they determine everything. Often they are small priorities: What do I make time for? What matters most to me? What draws my attention?
Over time, these very decisions shape our hearts. And at some point, it becomes clear where we truly belong – without us having consciously planned it.
📜 2. The biblical story – Luke and Demas
In Colossians 4, various co-workers are mentioned, including Luke and Demas. But later, in 2 Timothy 4:10–11, a clear difference between them becomes visible.
Luke remains faithfully by Paul’s side, even in difficult times.
Demas, on the other hand, leaves him – not out of fear, but because he “loved this present world.”
That is a powerful contrast. Both were close, both had the same opportunities – but their decisions led them in different directions.
🌍 3. Connection to our time today
People today also stand before the same inner decision. It is not only about outward behavior, but about what fills the heart.
The world offers many things: success, recognition, comfort. None of these is automatically wrong – but when they take first place, they change the direction of a person’s life.
💡 4. Central message of the lesson
In the end, what decides is not knowledge or affiliation, but the orientation of the heart.
👉 You cannot place both God and the world at the center at the same time.
✝️ 5. Theological focus
The Bible makes it clear that a person does not remain neutral. Everyone directs their life toward something.
In 1 John 2:15, it is clearly said that love for the world stands in contrast to love for God. This does not mean that we should leave the world, but that inwardly we should not let it define us.
The examples of Luke and Demas show:
Faithfulness is not a one-time decision, but a journey. And turning away often does not begin suddenly, but gradually through wrong priorities.
📖 6. Bible texts explained
In Mark 13:32–37, Jesus calls people to be watchful. No one knows the time of His return, therefore believers are to live ready. It is about an inner attitude of attentiveness.
Titus 2:11–14 shows that God’s grace not only saves us, but also changes us. It trains us to live thoughtfully and righteously and to separate ourselves from ungodly things.
In 2 Peter 3:10–14, the passing nature of this world is emphasized. Everything earthly will pass away. Therefore the question arises: What am I building my life on? The answer is a life of holiness and devotion.
Revelation 3:17–21 describes the church in Laodicea. It thinks it has everything, but inwardly it is poor. Jesus calls it to repentance and invites it to open its heart to Him. He wants to truly transform life.
👉 Taken together, these texts show:
A watchful, prepared faith consciously chooses God – again and again.
🔧 7. Application in everyday life
This lesson becomes very personal. It is not only about “the world,” but about concrete things in one’s own life.
You can ask yourself:
- What takes up the greatest space in my thinking?
- What influences my decisions the most?
- Where do I notice that I am giving God less space?
Change begins with honesty. After that come conscious decisions.
❓ 8. Reflection question
If someone looked at my life from the outside –
would they see that God is at the center?
🌟 9. Closing thought
Luke and Demas show two paths that look similar at the beginning, but end differently.
In the end, what matters is not how close someone once was,
but who truly owns the heart.
👉 Every day, we make this decision anew.
