🗺️ LESSONS OF FAITH FROM JOSHUA
Lesson 12 : God Is Faithful!

📘 12.2 A Sign of Concern
Past victories are signs of God – future victory depends on trust

🟦 Introduction

Success can be dangerous—especially when it is taken for granted. Israel had received the promised land, celebrated victories, and found rest. But Joshua, now advanced in age, sees something deeper: success must be preserved. And this is possible only through a lifestyle grounded in obedience to God’s Word.

God’s faithfulness is real—but it does not cancel our responsibility. This lesson reminds us that God’s provision is not static; it calls us to watchfulness, dependence, and faithfulness.

📖 Bible Study

🔍 1. Joshua 23: The Wise Farewell of a Leader
Text: Joshua 23:1–5

Joshua had grown old, and Israel had rest from its enemies. Joshua gathers the leaders and delivers a speech that is both a warning and an encouragement.

Main points:

  • Joshua’s old age (emphasized twice): a sign that his time is ending—but God’s work continues.

  • The victories were God’s work, not Israel’s strength.

  • Not all nations have been driven out yet—the mission is not fully completed.

  • God will continue to fight if the people remain faithful.

Commentary:
Israel’s history stands at a critical turning point. The land is largely conquered—but not completely. Joshua reminds the people that their past success was possible only through God’s intervention. These victories must never be taken for granted. The message is clear:

“The inheritance was given—but it must be preserved by faith.”

🔎 2. Spiritual Warfare Then and Now

Joshua 23:10 says:
“One of you will chase a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for you.”

Comparison with the New Testament:

  • Colossians 2:15: Christ has disarmed the powers.

  • 2 Corinthians 10:3–5: Our weapons are not of this world, but spiritual.

  • Ephesians 6:11–18: The armor of God—truth, faith, righteousness, the Spirit.

Commentary:
Just as Israel fought visible enemies, Christians today fight invisible spiritual forces. Victory over sin does not come through human effort, but through Christ’s work—and our continual connection with Him.

The enemies in the land were real—and so are our temptations today. Then as now, the truth remains:

“Trust and obedience are the path to victory.”

🗣️ Answers to the Questions

📌 Question 1: What are the main points of Joshua’s introduction (Josh 23:1–5)?

Answer:
Joshua’s introduction emphasizes three things:

  1. Remembering God’s faithfulness

    • The victories were not military, but divine.

    • God granted rest—a gift, not an achievement.

  2. The task not yet completed

    • Some peoples have not yet been driven out.

    • Possession of the land is not absolutely secure, but tied to continued obedience.

  3. Provision through warning

    • Joshua knows: success can lead to spiritual complacency.

    • Therefore he warns: only constant obedience preserves what God has given.

These points show that spiritual life is a process, not a finished state.

📌 Question 2: Why is it easy for us to sin despite so many promises?

Answer:

  1. The forgetfulness of the human heart

    • Like Israel, we quickly forget what God has done (see Psalm 106).

    • When circumstances are calm, watchfulness turns into comfort.

  2. Deceptive self-confidence

    • Success often leads to pride: “I’ve got this under control.”

    • Spiritual victories are not lasting if we disconnect from God.

  3. Underestimating spiritual warfare

    • The enemy never sleeps—but we often do.

    • Without spiritual armor (Eph 6), we stand unprotected.

  4. Inconsistency in faith

    • Spiritual life requires daily connection with Jesus.

    • Without it, we become easy prey for temptation.

Spiritual Principles

  • God’s faithfulness secures the beginning—our obedience preserves the goal.

  • Success is dangerous when it distracts us from trusting God.

  • Faith is not a possession, but a journey—walked anew each day.

  • Spiritual battles require spiritual means.

🛠️ Application in Daily Life

  • Shape morning prayers intentionally, asking for watchfulness.

  • Memorize God’s promises as spiritual “ammunition.”

  • Do not credit yourself for spiritual victories—give God the glory.

  • Remain spiritually active even in times of “rest” through regular Bible study and fellowship.

………….. 🗺️ …………..

Conclusion

God’s faithfulness brought Israel into the land—but the story was not finished. Our journey of faith also begins with grace, but it is sustained through obedience, watchfulness, and spiritual trust.

The victory is won—but the path remains a battle of faith.
Provision means: never stop trusting God.

“The Fence in the Wind”

Chapter 1 – The Farm

Noah Williams runs an organic farm near Alice Springs with his wife Leah. The farm is blessed: perfect weather, good harvests, healthy animals. Noah prays every morning, studies his Bible, and serves as an elder in the small church.

But with success comes comfort. Noah’s daily Bible study becomes shorter. The fence around the sheep pasture breaks in several places—he notices it, but “will fix it later.”

Chapter 2 – The Storm

A powerful storm sweeps across the land. Dozens of sheep escape through the damaged fence. Worse still, a wolf kills several animals. Noah is devastated. Why didn’t he act sooner? Why didn’t he repair the fence?

✦ ──────── ✦ ──────── ✦

Chapter 3 – The Inner Voice

In despair, Noah opens his Bible—randomly to Joshua 23. The words strike him deeply:
“The LORD your God has fought for you … Therefore be very determined to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”

Noah realizes: God’s blessing is not automatic. It requires obedience.

Chapter 4 – Restoration

Noah begins repairing the fences carefully—not only physically, but spiritually. He renews his morning devotion, prays deeply with Leah, and once again teaches Bible study to the youth in the church.

Chapter 5 – The New Foundation

A year later, new challenges arise—drought, political tension. But Noah is ready. The fence holds. His heart is firm. The church grows—not in numbers, but in faith.

At the farm gate now hangs a carved sign:
“Watchfulness is not fear—it is lived obedience.”

🧠 Final Reflections
Noah’s story shows us: God’s provision is real—but it calls us to a responsible, intentional life of trust in Him. Just like the fence on the farm, our faith needs care, attention, and readiness.

For the battle is not over—it has only changed its form.
