In the year 2026, the Doomsday Clock stands at 85 seconds to midnight – closer than ever before. Not in hours, not in minutes, but in seconds. According to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, this adjustment reflects the convergence of global risks: nuclear tensions between major powers, ongoing wars, the weakening of nuclear arms control, environmental instability, and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence without sufficient ethical constraints. The message is sobering. Humanity stands closer to the brink than ever before.
This clock is not a prophecy. It does not predict the return of Christ. But it is a warning. If scientists who study global risks say we are close to catastrophe, the church must not be distracted or remain silent. The clock does not announce the end of the world. It reveals the condition of the world.
Jesus said, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not troubled. For all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6). Christ did not deny global turmoil. He placed it within a larger context. He called His followers not to panic, but to remain faithful. The Bible never presents the last days as an excuse for fear. They are a call to live a meaningful life. Prophecy was not given to satisfy curiosity or to stir panic. It was given to shape character, awaken the conscience, and mobilize God’s people for their mission.
While scientists calculate fractions of seconds, heaven is looking for readiness. While the world counts down, God calls His people to look up, stand firm, and move forward. This is not a time for sensationalism or speculative timelines. It is a time for unwavering faith, compassionate witness, and disciplined obedience. “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:44). Readiness is not fear. Readiness means aligning with God’s will.
Now is not the time to retreat. Now is the time to rise. The clock may be close to midnight, but we still have a mission to fulfill. Christ is still Lord. And hope is still alive.
