๐ 2 Samuel Chapter 21 โ An Old Promise
๐พ Why God wants us to be faithfulโeven over many years
๐ Introduction
Sometimes people think:
โThat was a long time ago. It doesnโt count anymore.โ
But with God, itโs different.
What was once promised remains important.
In this story, God shows King David
that old guilt must not simply be forgotten.
True trust lives on the fact
that we keep our wordโeven many years later.
๐ The Bible story
It was a hard time in Israel.
For three years, hardly any rain fell.
The fields stayed dry.
The harvest withered.
People became restless.
They asked themselves:
โWhy isnโt God helping us? Why is the blessing missing?โ
King David also sensed
that this was not just a natural problem.
He prayed and asked God:
โLord, why is this famine coming upon us?โ
And God answered him:
โBecause of guilt that Saul brought upon himself.
He treated the Gibeonites badly.
Long ago, Israel had given them a promise:
โYou may live among us. We will do you no harm.โ
But Saul broke this promise.โ
David was shocked.
That was a long time agoโ
but God had not forgotten.
โ๏ธ David Seeks Justice
David summoned the Gibeonites.
He asked them:
โWhat can I do so that there may be peace between you and Israel?
What is just?โ
The Gibeonites replied:
โWe want no treasures.
And we do not want people from Israel to die.
But give us seven descendants of Saulโ
as punishment for what he did.โ
It was a difficult decision.
But David knew:
True trust also needs clear consequences.
๐ง A Mother Full of Grief
So seven men from Saulโs family
were handed over to the Gibeonites.
They were executedโand that was very sad.
One woman, Rizpah,
was the mother of two of these men.
She sat down on a rock,
watched over the bodies of her sons,
and day and night chased away birds and animals.
For weeks she stayed thereโin deep mourning.
When David heard about this, he was deeply moved.
He ordered that the dead men
be buried with honorโ
together with Saul and his son Jonathan.
And only then,
after this sign of justice and honor,
did the rain return to the land.
๐ฃ Summary
David sought Godโ
and God showed him an old guilt
that had not yet been healed.
David acted justlyโ
and honored those who had suffered.
And God let it rain again.
Sometimes things must be set right
before new blessing can come.
๐ Message for Children Today
Itโs easy to say:
โThat was long agoโฆ it doesnโt matter anymore.โ
But to God, faithfulness matters.
If you make a promiseโ
no matter how smallโ
keep it.
Because trust grows when we are honest and faithful.

๐ Invitation to 2 Samuel โ Chapter 22
๐ถ A Song Full of Gratitude
Do you know the feeling
when you just want to sing out loud
because youโre happy?
Because you know: God has saved youโagain and again?
Thatโs exactly how David felt.
He was no longer a boy.
He was king, soldier, musicianโ
and he had lived through many hard times.
But now he looked back
and wrote a song,
full of praise, thanks, and trust.
๐ Teaser for Chapter 22
David had fought Goliath.
He had fled from Saul.
He had won battles against many enemies.
And through it all, God had always been with him.
In chapter 22, David writes a song:
โThe Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer!โ
He remembers
how God rescued him from deep waters,
how God made him strong,
and how Godโs ways are goodโ
even when they are sometimes hard.
๐ Chapter 22 is not a battle report,
but a song of praise.
A song we could still sing today
when we realize:
God is faithful. Always.
