π 2 Samuel Chapter 21 β An Old Promise
πΎ Why God wants us to be faithfulβeven over many years
π Introduction
Sometimes people think:
βThat was a long time ago. It doesnβt count anymore.β
But with God, itβs different.
What was once promised remains important.
In this story, God shows King David
that old guilt must not simply be forgotten.
True trust lives on the fact
that we keep our wordβeven many years later.
π The Bible story
It was a hard time in Israel.
For three years, hardly any rain fell.
The fields stayed dry.
The harvest withered.
People became restless.
They asked themselves:
βWhy isnβt God helping us? Why is the blessing missing?β
King David also sensed
that this was not just a natural problem.
He prayed and asked God:
βLord, why is this famine coming upon us?β
And God answered him:
βBecause of guilt that Saul brought upon himself.
He treated the Gibeonites badly.
Long ago, Israel had given them a promise:
βYou may live among us. We will do you no harm.β
But Saul broke this promise.β
David was shocked.
That was a long time agoβ
but God had not forgotten.
βοΈ David Seeks Justice
David summoned the Gibeonites.
He asked them:
βWhat can I do so that there may be peace between you and Israel?
What is just?β
The Gibeonites replied:
βWe want no treasures.
And we do not want people from Israel to die.
But give us seven descendants of Saulβ
as punishment for what he did.β
It was a difficult decision.
But David knew:
True trust also needs clear consequences.
π§ A Mother Full of Grief
So seven men from Saulβs family
were handed over to the Gibeonites.
They were executedβand that was very sad.
One woman, Rizpah,
was the mother of two of these men.
She sat down on a rock,
watched over the bodies of her sons,
and day and night chased away birds and animals.
For weeks she stayed thereβin deep mourning.
When David heard about this, he was deeply moved.
He ordered that the dead men
be buried with honorβ
together with Saul and his son Jonathan.
And only then,
after this sign of justice and honor,
did the rain return to the land.
π£ Summary
David sought Godβ
and God showed him an old guilt
that had not yet been healed.
David acted justlyβ
and honored those who had suffered.
And God let it rain again.
Sometimes things must be set right
before new blessing can come.
π Message for Children Today
Itβs easy to say:
βThat was long agoβ¦ it doesnβt matter anymore.β
But to God, faithfulness matters.
If you make a promiseβ
no matter how smallβ
keep it.
Because trust grows when we are honest and faithful.

π Invitation to 2 Samuel β Chapter 22
πΆ A Song Full of Gratitude
Do you know the feeling
when you just want to sing out loud
because youβre happy?
Because you know: God has saved youβagain and again?
Thatβs exactly how David felt.
He was no longer a boy.
He was king, soldier, musicianβ
and he had lived through many hard times.
But now he looked back
and wrote a song,
full of praise, thanks, and trust.
π Teaser for Chapter 22
David had fought Goliath.
He had fled from Saul.
He had won battles against many enemies.
And through it all, God had always been with him.
In chapter 22, David writes a song:
βThe Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer!β
He remembers
how God rescued him from deep waters,
how God made him strong,
and how Godβs ways are goodβ
even when they are sometimes hard.
π Chapter 22 is not a battle report,
but a song of praise.
A song we could still sing today
when we realize:
God is faithful. Always.
