๐ 2 Samuel 4 โ Justice Instead of Revenge
โจ David resists the temptation to gain power through murder โ a king with principles
๐ Read online here
๐ Introduction
The fourth chapter of 2 Samuel describes the brutal murder of Ish-Bosheth, Saulโs son, by two of his own men. They bring his head to David, hoping to receive a reward. But David reacts very differently: with horror, with justice โ not with reward.
This chapter continues the political tension between the house of Saul and the house of David and shows how David is led to become king over all Israel not through violence, but through patience and Godโs guidance.

๐งต Commentary
After Abnerโs death, the house of Saul begins to collapse. Ish-Bosheth, the weak king over northern Israel, loses his strength โ his hands grow โfeeble,โ he has no support. The people are shaken. Without Abner, he lacks both military and political backing.
In this uncertain time, two men step forward: Rechab and Baanah, once commanders under Ish-Bosheth. But they are not loyal โ they see an opportunity. While Ish-Bosheth rests in his house during the heat of the day, they break in, kill him on his bed โ cowardly and cold-blooded. They cut off his head, carry it through the night, and present it to David in Hebron as what they think is a sign of loyalty.
But they do not understand David. For him, violence to gain power is not the way. He remembers another messenger โ the one who reported Saulโs death in hope of a reward. That man too was judged.
David recognizes the seriousness of the crime: the murder of innocent Ish-Bosheth, on his own bed. No battlefield, no self-defense โ only abuse of power. So David has the murderers executed. Justice is done โ not with hatred, but with clarity. Ish-Boshethโs head is buried with honor in Abnerโs tomb, as a sign of respect for the house of Saul.

๐ฆ Message for Us Today
๐ฉ Power must not stand above morality.
Even in times of uncertainty and political chaos, David chooses principles over revenge. That is rare โ and it is exactly what makes him a man after Godโs own heart.
๐ฉ Godโs ways are not the ways of violence.
David knew: the throne was his by Godโs calling โ not by human schemes. Even when people wanted to shorten the path for him, he remained steadfast.
๐ฉ Justice takes courage โ even when it is uncomfortable.
David did not act out of personal revenge, but to send a message: murder and lust for power are not rewarded, they are judged.

๐ Reflection
๐ญ What shortcuts to โpowerโ or to your goals does life offer you that do not match Godโs way?
๐ญ Do you have the courage to act justly even when others do wrong and seem to offer you advantages?
๐ญ What does it mean for you in everyday life to live โnot by might, but by the Spirit of Godโ (see Zechariah 4:6)?

๐งต Commentary
In the days of the great festivals, the tribes of Israel streamed to Shiloh. Men, women, children โ they came to offer sacrifices, to celebrate, to meet God. The tabernacle was the center of their faith. And there stood Hophni and Phinehas โ Eliโs sons โ as priests.
But these men were not servants of God. They were servants of their own greed. The altar, consecrated for the peopleโs sacrifice, became a marketplace in their hands. Instead of preparing the holy offering in obedience, they grabbed for it greedily. They demanded the meat before the fat was offered to God โ and they threatened if it was refused.
They knew the law. They knew the meaning of the sacrifices โ pointers to the coming Redeemer. But their hearts were hard, their reverence gone. They despised what was holy. And the people? They watched. They complained. They lost respect. More and more people stopped coming to Shiloh. Worship lost its value โ and with it the people lost their faith.
And Eli? He knew about it. But instead of removing the men, he let them continue. Even as Godโs priest, he remained silent where God would have cried out.

Spiritual service is not a place for personal interests. Whoever stands before God does not stand for himself, but for heaven. And whoever misuses that service harms not only himself โ but the faith of many.
