π 1 Kings Chapter 12 β A Divided Kingdom
β οΈ When Pride Matters More Than Listening
π Introduction
Some decisions seem very small β
but they can change everything.
In chapter 12, a young king faces an important question:
π How do I want to lead?
π Do I listen to those who have experience β or to my friends?
Rehoboamβs answer doesnβt just bring unrest β
it leads to the great nation of Israel breaking apart.
π The Bible story
Solomon was dead.
His son Rehoboam was to become the new king.
All the Israelites gathered in Shechem.
A man named Jeroboam was there too β
he had once been a servant under Solomon,
and now he was a leader in the north.
The people said to Rehoboam:
βYour father made us work hard.
If you make it easier,
we will follow you with all our hearts.β
Rehoboam asked for three days to think.
π§ Two Kinds of Advice
First, Rehoboam asked the older advisers
who had served his father.
They said:
βIf you are kind today,
if you listen to the people and serve them,
they will love you forever.β
But then Rehoboam called his young friends.
They advised:
βShow strength! Tell them:
βMy little finger is thicker than my fatherβs waist!
If he whipped you with whips,
I will whip you with scorpions!ββ
Rehoboam listened to the young men.
He wanted to show that he was the boss.
β‘ The People React
When Rehoboam gave the people his harsh answer,
their reaction was strong.
They shouted:
βWhat do we have to do with the house of David?
Back to your tents, Israel!β
Only the tribe of Judah stayed loyal to Rehoboam.
The other ten tribes broke away from the royal house
and made Jeroboam their own king.
So the great kingdom of Israel was split β
into two kingdoms:
-
The Northern Kingdom Israel, with ten tribes under Jeroboam
-
The Southern Kingdom Judah, with Rehoboam and the tribe of Judah (and Benjamin)
π£ Summary
A new king β Rehoboam β had the chance to start well.
The people asked for relief.
But instead of listening,
he chose harshness and pride.
The result:
π The nation separated.
π Two kingdoms were formed.
π A time of tension began.
π Message for Children Today
It is not wrong to be strong.
But true strength is shown in listening, serving, and having the right heart.
Rehoboam wanted to show power,
but he lost the trust of his people.
God is glad
when people lead with humility β
when they listen, act kindly, and ask for His will.
π Thought Impulse
πΉ Why did Rehoboam listen to his young friends?
πΉ What does it mean to be a good leader β at school or at home?
πΉ How can you show others today that you want to act respectfully and fairly?

π Invitation to 1 Kings Chapter 13
β οΈ When Even Prophets Make Mistakes
Jeroboam is now king in the northern kingdom.
But he is afraid the people might return to Jerusalem.
So he invents his own kind of worship β
with his own altars, priests, and golden calves.
But God does not let this simply happenβ¦
In chapter 13, a prophet comes with a warning.
Yet the prophet himself must learn:
π Whoever listens to God should not stop halfway.
π Teaser for Chapter 13
A prophet comes from Judah.
He stands bravely before Jeroboamβs altar
and cries out:
π£οΈ βThis altar will break!
God will bring another king β Josiah!β
And at that very moment something happens:
β‘ The altar breaks,
β and Jeroboamβs hand suddenly becomes stiff.
The prophet had been given clear instructions:
βEat no bread, drink no water,
and do not return by the same way.β
But on the way back he meets an old prophet
who persuades him to stayβ¦
and that leads to sad consequences.
Chapter 13 shows:
π Even people who know God well
must obey Him consistently.
