Series: THE LETTERS OF PAUL TO THE PHILIPPIANS & COLOSSIANS with Pastor Mark Finley

📘 Lesson 10 : Complete in Christ
🪨 Our Foundation and Our Fullness

Introduction:

Lesson 10 directs our attention to Christ as the center of our faith and our hope. Paul makes it clear that in Him all wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual fullness are found. The church is encouraged to remain firmly rooted in Him and not to be unsettled by human teachings or religious additions. The cross stands at the center: it is the place where guilt was removed and true freedom was given. This lesson invites us to renew our trust in the finished work of Jesus and to find our spiritual stability in Him alone.

10.1 The Wisdom and Knowledge of God
Hidden in Christ – The Source of All Wisdom

Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians to encourage believers, strengthen them inwardly, and unite them in love. His goal was not merely to refute false teachings, but to firmly root the church in Christ, in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden. True spiritual security arises where faith, love, and biblical truth work together. The order in the church emphasized by Paul was not merely organizational, but an expression of divine wisdom meant to safeguard sound teaching. Because the Colossians stood on a solid foundation, they were able to resist error. Today as well, Christ gives us clarity about the meaning of life when we remain rooted and established in Him.

🌿 10.2 Rooted and Growing in Christ
Rooted in Life – Genuine, Not Artificial

Paul reminds us that Christian living means continuing in Christ just as we received Him: personally, trustingly, and wholeheartedly. Receiving Christ means dying to self and daily submitting to His guidance through His Word and Spirit. Just as a plant grows only when it is firmly rooted, we are strengthened in faith only when we remain in Him. Those who follow human philosophies or unbiblical traditions resemble artificial plants—perhaps outwardly impressive, but without real life. Spiritual growth happens where Christ remains the source and His Word the foundation of all decisions. Therefore, dying to self is not a one-time event but a daily path into deeper freedom and faith.

✝️ 10.3 Nailed to the Cross
Freed by the Cross – Not the Law, but the Debt

In Colossians 2:11–15, Paul emphasizes spiritual renewal through Christ rather than the abolition of God’s moral law. The “nailing to the cross” refers in context to the record of debt and the ceremonial law that pointed forward to Christ and was fulfilled through His sacrifice. Paul speaks of the “circumcision of the heart” and connects it with baptism, forgiveness, and new life—a picture of inner transformation, not lawlessness. The ceremonial law, which separated Jews and Gentiles, lost its binding function because the reality had come in Christ. The Ten Commandments, however, remain the standard, since Paul continues to define sin as transgression of the law. At the cross, God’s order was not abolished; rather, our guilt was defeated and the way to freedom was opened.

🌅 10.4 Shadow or Substance?
Shadow and Reality – Christ at the Center

In Colossians 2:16–19, Paul addresses Jewish ceremonial practices such as food and drink offerings, festivals, new moons, and ceremonial Sabbaths that pointed forward to Christ. These were “shadows” of what was to come, while Christ Himself is the substance or reality. Paul opposes the pressure to demand these practices as necessary for salvation, especially among Gentile believers. He also warns against a form of piety focused on outward practices or even angel worship, losing sight of Christ as the head. What truly matters is living connection with Him, from whom genuine spiritual growth comes. We apply Paul’s counsel not to judge others by distinguishing between biblical truth and human additions, and by allowing space for conscience without removing Christ from the center.

🔓 10.5 Commandments of Men
Freedom Instead of Burden – Christ Is Enough

Paul warns against submitting again to human regulations and outdated ceremonial rules, which he calls “elements of the world” that pointed to Christ. What was once divinely instituted has now found its fulfillment in Him and is no longer necessary for salvation. If we assign saving value to such rules, we turn the gospel into a burden and shift our trust from Christ to our own performance. Outward piety may appear strict and impressive, but it has no power to truly transform the heart. Our salvation rests solely on what Jesus accomplished outside of us and in our place—not on religious discipline or human requirements. Therefore, we remain free by anchoring our hope entirely in His finished work.

👑 10.6 Summary
Complete in Christ – His Fullness Is Sufficient

Lesson 10 shows that in Christ all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden, and in Him we have everything we need for salvation. Paul emphasizes that true spiritual growth comes from a living relationship with Christ—rooted, established, and growing in faith. The cross did not abolish God’s moral law, but removed our guilt and fulfilled the ceremonial system. The ceremonial shadows pointed to Christ, but He is the reality, and human additions have no saving value. The central message is this: our salvation is grounded entirely in the finished work of Jesus. Whoever remains in Him lives in freedom, clarity, and spiritual stability.
