📜 2 Samuel Chapter 24 – David Counts the People
⚠️ When a strong king makes a mistake – and God is still merciful
🌅 Introduction
At the end of his life, David was an experienced king.
He had won many victories.
He had gone through highs and lows.
He had learned much —
especially that one should trust in God,
not in one’s own strength.
But now, of all times,
at the end of his life,
David made a mistake.
A mistake with serious consequences.
Yet even in this story we see:
God is merciful — and David remains a man after God’s own heart.
📖 The Bible story
One day a thought came to David.
He wanted to know how strong Israel had become.
How many soldiers did he have?
How large was his army?
He said to Joab, the commander of the army:
“Count all the fighting men in Israel and Judah. I want to know how many there are.”
Joab was surprised.
He asked:
“Why do you want to do this, my king? Better trust in the Lord!”
But David insisted.
So Joab and his men went throughout the whole land,
counted the cities and the men —
and after many months they returned.
😔 A Serious Mistake
When Joab reported the number,
David suddenly felt something in his heart.
A terrible feeling.
“I have made a mistake,” he whispered.
“Why did I trust in numbers — and not in God?”
David knew:
He had acted out of pride.
God was saddened —
not because of the number itself,
but because David had lost his trust.
💬 God’s Answer
Then the prophet Gad came to David
with a message from God:
“The Lord gives you three choices for punishment:
Three years of famine.
Three months of fleeing from your enemies.
Three days of a severe plague in the land.”
David was shocked.
What should he do?
He said:
“Let me fall into the hands of the Lord,
for His mercy is great.
But do not let me fall into human hands.”
⚡ The Plague – and David’s Prayer
Then a plague came upon the land.
Many people became sick.
David was horrified.
He prayed:
“Lord, punish me — not the people!
I am the one who has sinned.”
David realized:
A king is responsible not only for himself,
but also for his people.
⛏️ The Special Place
God heard David’s prayer.
The angel who had brought the plague stopped —
on a field that belonged to a man named Araunah.
The prophet Gad said to David:
“Build an altar here. Offer a sacrifice to the Lord.”
David went to Araunah and said:
“I would like to buy your threshing floor. I want to offer a sacrifice here.”
Araunah wanted to give it to him as a gift.
But David said:
“No. I will not give God something
that costs me nothing.”
So he bought the land,
built an altar,
and offered a sacrifice to God.
And God accepted the sacrifice —
and the plague stopped.
🟣 Summary
David was a great king —
but he was not without faults.
When, at the end of his life, he trusted in his own strength,
God showed him:
True security comes not from numbers or power,
but from trust in God.
Yet David did the right thing:
He admitted his mistake,
asked God for mercy —
and offered a sacrifice.
And God forgave him.
💚 Message for Children Today
We also make mistakes.
Sometimes we trust more in
what we can see and count —
instead of trusting in God.
But when we are honest,
admit our guilt,
and come to God,
He forgives us.
For God is full of mercy.
And:
True faith is often shown
not by taking the easiest path,
but the right one.
