After the harsh words of his friends, Job answers again. He firmly rejects their accusations and makes it clear that he too knows the greatness of God. Job chapter 12 turns our eyes away from human explanations and toward God’s incomprehensible power and wisdom.

🧵 Commentary
Job begins his answer with clear irony. He says to his friends: “Truly, you are the only wise people.” With this, he makes it clear that their arrogance has hurt him. They speak as though they alone have understood the truth.
Job explains that he also knows God’s wisdom. He is by no means inferior to their arguments. The problem is not that he lacks knowledge, but that his friends judge his situation wrongly.
Then Job describes a painful experience. Righteous people are often mocked, while those who do evil seem to live undisturbed. In this way, he questions the simple idea that God immediately rewards or punishes every person according to their deeds.
Afterward, Job turns his eyes to creation. He calls his friends to observe the animals, the birds, the earth, and the fish. All creation testifies that all life depends on the hand of God.
Job describes God as the Lord over the whole world. He tears down, and no one can rebuild. He shuts in, and no one opens. He withholds water or lets floods come. Kings, judges, priests, and the powerful all stand equally under his rule.
With impressive images, Job shows that God’s wisdom and power go far beyond human plans. He determines the course of history and sets limits that no one can cross.
These statements make it clear that God’s actions cannot be explained by simple formulas. The Lord rules sovereignly over all creation, even when human beings often do not understand his ways.
Therefore, Job does not contradict his friends because he denies God’s greatness. On the contrary: precisely because God is so great, his actions cannot be reduced to simple rules.
Job chapter 12 invites us to approach God with reverence. His wisdom surpasses our thinking, and his rule includes heaven and earth. Therefore, we may trust him even when we do not fully understand his ways.
