🌅 Devotional for the Day
Jesus once told a story about two men who went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. Both stood before God, yet their attitudes were completely different. The Pharisee listed what he did and what made him different from others. The tax collector, however, hardly dared to lift his eyes toward heaven. His prayer was short but honest: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!”
This story brings us right into the theme of judgment. Before God, self-justification does not count—truth does. A person may present themselves well before others, but before God the heart lies open. No one will stand in the judgment because they can defend themselves. Our only hope is in the grace of God.
Humility does not mean denying one’s own worth. It means honestly recognizing that we are completely dependent on God’s mercy. The tax collector went home justified, not because he had much to show, but because he sought God’s grace.
In the light of the heavenly judgment, this attitude is decisive. We do not come to God with a list of our merits, but with empty hands and a trusting heart. And precisely where a person stops justifying themselves, God can justify them.
✨ Humility Opens the Heart to Grace
Pride closes the heart because it believes it needs nothing. Humility, on the other hand, opens the heart because it recognizes that every good thing comes from God.
Ellen G. White wrote:
“Those who recognize their own unworthiness and rely on the merits of Christ will be accepted by God.”
(Steps to Christ, p. 35)
This realization is not degrading but liberating. We do not need to present ourselves as better than we are. We may be honest and receive God’s grace.
🌿 No Self-Justification Before God
Self-justification is a deep human tendency. Since the fall into sin, human beings have tried to explain, shift, or hide guilt. But true healing begins only where we stop defending ourselves.
Ellen G. White wrote:
“Confession of sin is never forced; it springs from a heart that has been humbled by the Spirit of God.”
(Steps to Christ, p. 37)
The judgment does not call us to hide, but to come to Christ.
🕊️ Christ Is Our Justification
The humble person does not remain stuck in guilt. They look to Christ. They know that their hope does not lie in their own worthiness, but in the righteousness of Jesus.
That is why humility is not a state of hopelessness. It is the way to true security. For those who no longer need to defend themselves may fully rely on the Advocate.
🙏 Prayer
Dear Father in heaven,
keep me from pride and self-justification.
Help me to stand honestly before You and to place all my hope in Your grace.
Thank You that I am not accepted through my own merits, but through Jesus Christ.
Give me a humble heart that is willing to be changed by You.
Lead me into the freedom of Your forgiveness and keep me close to You.
Amen.
