β¨ Esther Chapter 5 β The Decisive Moment
π When Courage Dares to Take the First Step
π Introduction
Three days had passed. For three days, Esther, her maidservants, and the Jews in Susa had fasted. In many homes, people had prayed, hoped, and waited. No one knew how the king would react if Esther came before him without being called.
For Esther, this day was different from every other day in the palace. She was queen, yet even she could not simply go to the king. The law was strict. Only if Ahasuerus extended his golden scepter to her would she be allowed to live.
Now Esther had to act. She could no longer wait. Her people were in danger, and the path to rescue led through the kingβs throne room.
This chapter tells of a courageous step, a surprising plan, and a proud man who does not realize that his own plans are beginning to shake dangerously.
π The Biblical Story
π Esther Goes to the King
On the third day, Esther put on her royal garments. Perhaps she looked beautiful, but in her heart she was surely very tense. Before her lay a path that no one would take lightly.
Slowly she made her way to the inner court of the royal palace. There Ahasuerus sat on his throne. Each step brought Esther closer to the decisive moment.
When the king saw her, everything remained uncertain for a moment. Would he become angry? Would he send her away? Or would he show her grace?
Then what Esther and many others had hoped for happened. The king looked at her kindly and extended the golden scepter to her.
Esther was allowed to live.
π An Invitation Instead of a Request
The king immediately realized that Esther had not come without a reason. He asked her what she desired and generously promised to grant her request.
Now Esther could have spoken at once about Haman and his cruel plan. But she did not. Instead, she invited the king to a banquet.
And not only the king. Haman was to come as well.
That was surprising. Perhaps no one would have expected Esther to invite the very man who wanted to harm her people. But Esther did not act carelessly. She proceeded step by step.
The king accepted the invitation, and Haman was quickly summoned. For him, it was a great honor to be invited by the queen together with the king.
π· The First Banquet
At the banquet, the king again asked Esther what she desired. Once more, he offered to grant her request. But Esther still waited.
She invited the king and Haman to a second banquet the next day. Then, she said, she would make her request known.
The king was curious, but he agreed. Haman, however, was full of pride. He felt more important than ever before. Of all the princes of the kingdom, he was the one invited by the queen.
When he left the palace, his heart was full of joy. For a moment, everything seemed to be going according to his wishes.
π Hamanβs Joy Falls Apart
But on his way home, Haman saw Mordecai at the kingβs gate. Mordecai did not stand up and did not bow down before him.
In a single moment, Hamanβs joy disappeared. Everything he had just been proud of suddenly seemed to mean nothing to him. His wealth, his honor, the queenβs invitation β he could enjoy none of it as long as Mordecai refused to honor him.
At home, Haman told his wife and his friends about his success. He spoke of his wealth, his high position, and Estherβs special invitation.
But then he said that all of it was worth nothing to him as long as Mordecai sat at the gate and refused to bow before him.
πͺ΅ A Dangerous Suggestion
Hamanβs wife and his friends listened to him. Then they made a terrible suggestion. Haman should have a very high gallows built and, the next morning, ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on it.
After that, he could go joyfully to the second banquet.
Haman liked this suggestion. His anger was so great that he could no longer see clearly. That very night he had the gallows prepared.
To Haman, everything looked like a certain plan. The next day he wanted to get rid of Mordecai and afterward go to the queen as an honored guest.
But Haman did not know that God was already guiding things differently. While he was making his dark plans, a night was unfolding in the palace that would change everything.
π The Tension Grows
At the end of this chapter, nothing has been resolved yet. Esther has not yet made her request. Haman is proud and dangerous. Mordecai does not know that a gallows has been prepared for him.
But the story continues to move forward. Esther has taken the first courageous step, and God is working in secret.
Sometimes we cannot yet see a solution, even though God is already at work. That is exactly how it is here. The danger is great, but rescue is closer than anyone suspects.
π What This Chapter Shows
This chapter shows that courage often begins with a first step. Esther did not know how everything would turn out, but she went to the king anyway.
We also see how dangerous pride can be. Haman had great honor, but his heart was so full of pride that one single person could destroy all his joy.
π£ Summary
Esther courageously goes to the king, even though she had not been called. The king extends the golden scepter to her and receives her kindly. Instead of making her request immediately, Esther invites the king and Haman to a banquet and asks them to come again the next day. At first, Haman is very proud, but he becomes angry when Mordecai does not bow before him. Following the advice of his family, he has a gallows prepared for Mordecai.
π Message for Children Today
Courage does not mean that you are not afraid. Courage means taking the right step, even when you do not know how everything will turn out.
Hamanβs story reminds us that pride can make our hearts dissatisfied. Gratitude and humility help us see more clearly.
