🧡 Commentary

The day arrives that Haman had determined by casting lots. His intention had been to wipe out the Jewish people. But by now, the circumstances had completely changed. Mordecai holds great authority in the kingdom, and the Jews have received permission to defend themselves.

When their enemies try to attack them, their plan does not succeed. Instead, the Jews gain the upper hand. In many provinces of the Persian Empire, the attacks are repelled. The people recognize that the position of the Jews has changed fundamentally.

Especially in the capital city of Susa, it becomes clear how greatly the situation has turned around. The enemies of the people cannot carry out their plans. The ten sons of Haman also die. Thus ends the family of the man who had planned the destruction of Israel.

It is remarkable that although the Jews defeat their opponents, they do not take any plunder for themselves. It is explicitly mentioned several times that they do not enrich themselves with the possessions of their enemies. Their goal is not revenge or gain, but protection and survival.

When the danger is over, the mood among the people changes. The days of fear become days of joy. The people celebrate, eat together, and give gifts to one another. What had begun as a time of sorrow becomes a festival of gratitude.

For this reason, the festival of Purim is established. The name recalls the β€œpur,” the lot with which Haman wanted to determine the day of destruction. This very symbol of his plans now becomes a sign of God’s rescue.

Mordecai and Esther confirm that this festival should be celebrated every year in the future. Coming generations are to remember how God preserved His people and turned their sorrow into joy.

The chapter powerfully shows that God can completely turn situations around. What looked like the end became the beginning of new hope. The day of destruction became the day of rescue.
