🧭 1.3 When God Comes First

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Putting God first means trusting Him more than your own assessment and including Him in every area of life.
Many people want God to bless their lives. They desire peace, protection, guidance, and answers to their prayers. Yet in everyday life, God often remains only a part of life, not the center. He is sought when things become difficult. He is called upon when human solutions are no longer enough. He is mentioned when decisions become too heavy. But the question is: Is God truly in first place?
Proverbs 3:5–6 is one of the best-known passages in the book of Proverbs. It does not speak only about faith in general, but about a very concrete attitude toward life: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart.” Not halfway. Not only in certain areas. Not only when we see no other option. With all your heart.
This means that God should not be the last resort, but the first One we turn to. He should not merely bless our plans after we have made them ourselves. He should guide our plans before we make them. Whoever fears the Lord does not place God at the edge of life, but at the center.
The fear of the Lord is revealed precisely here: To whom do I give first place? To my own opinion? To my feelings? To the pressure of other people? To society’s expectations? Or to God?
The verse continues: “Lean not on your own understanding.” This does not mean that thinking is wrong. God has given us understanding. We should think, examine, learn, and act responsibly. But our understanding is limited. It does not see everything. It does not know the future. It can be mistaken. It can be influenced by fear, pride, wishful thinking, or wounds.
That is why the Bible warns us not to rely only on our own understanding. It is possible for a path to sound logical and still be spiritually dangerous. It is possible for a decision to bring advantages and yet weaken the character. It is possible for something to appear wise from a human perspective and still not be God’s will.
Therefore, putting God first means placing our own cleverness under God’s wisdom. It means asking not only, “What can I do?” but, “What does God want me to do?” Not only, “What is possible?” but, “What is right?” Not only, “What will bring me success?” but, “What honors the Lord?”
Proverbs 3:6 says: “In all your ways acknowledge Him.” This phrase is very important. It does not say, “Acknowledge Him in some of your ways.” It does not say, “Acknowledge Him only in worship, in prayer, or on the Sabbath.” It says: in all your ways.
God wants to be included in our decisions. In our family. In our work. In our conversations. In how we handle money. In our free time. In our plans. In our relationships. In our thoughts. In our habits. In our use of media. In our reaction to conflicts. In the way we treat our body, health, and time.
Sometimes we artificially divide life into “spiritual” and “everyday.” But in the book of Proverbs, this separation does not exist. All of life takes place before God. Faith is shown not only in what we sing or confess, but in what we choose, say, do, and leave undone.
When God comes first, the order of our questions also changes. We do not ask first, “What do others want?” We ask, “What does God say?” We do not ask first, “What is comfortable?” We ask, “What is faithful?” We do not ask first, “What feels good?” We ask, “What brings me closer to Christ?”
This is not always easy. Our hearts often want to decide for themselves. We want control. We want security. We want quick answers. But trust means following God even when we do not understand everything. It means taking His hand even when the path is not yet fully visible.
The text gives a wonderful promise: “He shall direct your paths.” This does not mean that God removes every problem immediately. It does not mean that the way will always be easy. But it does mean that God guides. He makes the path clear. He opens doors that are right. He closes doors that would harm us. He gives orientation, peace, and inner firmness.
Sometimes God directs the path not by changing the circumstances, but by changing our hearts. He gives patience where we were restless. He gives courage where we were afraid. He gives clarity where there was confusion. He gives humility where pride had made us blind.
For us as Christians, this thought is especially important. Whoever waits for the second coming of Jesus needs a life that is guided daily by God. It is not enough to know correct doctrines if God does not truly have first place in the heart. Prophetic knowledge without daily trust can become cold. Religious habit without surrender can become empty. But a heart that puts God first remains alive.
The fear of the Lord is therefore not only respect for God’s greatness. It is also the decision to give Him priority. God first in my thoughts. God first in my decisions. God first in my daily routine. God first in my relationships. God first in my goals.
Perhaps this sounds big. But it begins small. It begins in the morning with a simple prayer: “Lord, guide me today.” It begins before a conversation with the thought: “Lord, give me the right words.” It begins before a decision with the question: “Lord, is this path good before You?” It begins in temptation with the cry: “Lord, help me remain faithful.”
Putting God first does not mean that we are perfect. It means that we return to Him again and again. It means that we do not want to plan without Him. It means that we value His voice more highly than our own sense of security.
The world says: “Trust yourself.”
Proverbs says: “Trust in the Lord.”
The world says: “Follow your feelings.”
Proverbs says: “Acknowledge God in all your ways.”
The world says: “You must control everything.”
Proverbs says: “God will direct your paths.”
Perhaps today is the right moment to reorder these priorities. Not God as an addition to your life. Not God as help for emergencies. Not God as a religious part of the weekend. But God as Lord of your whole life.
When God comes first, everything else finds its proper place.
🧭 Application for Today
Today, consciously choose one area of your life where you want to put God first again. Perhaps it concerns your time, your decisions, your family, your work, your thoughts, or your plans for the future.
Do not pray only, “Lord, bless my way,” but rather, “Lord, show me Your way.”

Lord, I want to trust You with all my heart. Forgive me when I have often gone my own way and asked You only afterward. Teach me to acknowledge You in all my ways. Help me place my plans, thoughts, and decisions under Your guidance. Give me courage to trust Your Word more than my own assessment. Be the center of my life. Amen.
