π Devotional of the Day
The first angelβs message calls out with a clear voice: βFear God.β At first glance, this expression can be misunderstood. Many people immediately think of fear, insecurity, or the feeling that they must run away from God. But the biblical fear of God is something deeper and more beautiful. It means reverence, respect, trust, and the willingness to give God the place that belongs to him.
God does not want people to tremble before him as before a harsh ruler. He has revealed himself in Jesus Christ as a Father who loves, saves, and forgives. At the same time, he is the holy God, the Creator of heaven and earth, the Judge of the whole world, and the King over all kings. True fear of God holds both together: his nearness and his holiness, his love and his greatness, his grace and his truth.
In a time when many people treat God lightly or push him completely out of their thinking, the first angelβs message calls us back to reverence. It reminds us that our life is not accidental and that our decisions have meaning. God is not a religious idea that one may accept or reject as one wishes. He is the living Lord, before whom every heart lies open.
Yet this very awareness does not lead to fear when we know Christ. Whoever fears God in the biblical sense does not run away from him, but comes closer to him. Reverence for God protects us from superficiality. It awakens the heart, makes it humble, and prepares it to hear Godβs voice.
The three angelsβ messages begin with the everlasting gospel and then call us to fear God. This shows that reverence grows out of an encounter with Godβs grace. Whoever recognizes how great Godβs love is and how serious his truth remains will not treat him lightly, but will surrender the heart fully to him.
β¨ Reverence Is Not Paralyzing Fear
The biblical fear of God does not destroy the joy of faith. It deepens it. It makes us aware that we live before a perfectly holy God who nevertheless accepts us in Christ.
Ellen G. White wrote:
βThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and whoever truly knows God will love him and trust him.β
(Steps to Christ, p. 10)
This reverence leads to a faith that does not remain superficial. It protects us from making Godβs grace cheap and helps us seek his presence with a grateful heart.
πΏ Taking God Seriously
βFear Godβ also means: Take God seriously. Take his Word seriously. Take his love seriously. Take his call seriously. The first angelβs message is proclaimed in a time when people can be distracted, busy, and spiritually sleepy. That is why God calls his people to clarity.
Ellen G. White wrote:
βThese messages are the last warnings to be given to the world.β
(The Great Controversy, p. 436)
A final warning is not a sign of lacking love. It is a sign of great mercy. God speaks because he wants to save. He calls because people are precious to him.
ποΈ Reverence in Daily Life
The fear of God is not shown only in solemn moments or in worship. It is shown in everyday life: in our thoughts, words, decisions, and relationships. Whoever fears God does not ask only, βWhat do I want?β but also, βWhat honors God?β
This attitude changes life. It makes us more careful with our words, more honest in our decisions, and more humble in dealing with others. It does not lead us into narrowness, but into freedom, because we learn to live under Godβs loving authority.
The first angelβs message calls us today to give God first place again. Not out of fear of punishment, but out of reverence for his love, his holiness, and his coming kingdom.
π Prayer
Dear Father in heaven,
teach me to fear you in the right way.
Keep me from paralyzing fear, but also from spiritual superficiality.
Help me to recognize your holiness and understand your love more deeply.
Give me a heart that takes you seriously, trusts your Word, and gives you first place.
Let my life be marked by reverence, gratitude, and faithfulness.
Amen.
