🔥 Ezra Chapter 3 – The Altar and the Great Feast

🎺 When a new beginning starts with God

🌅 Introduction

After a long and exhausting journey, the returnees have finally arrived in Jerusalem. They had been traveling for weeks. They had crossed dusty roads, spent many nights under the open sky, and dreamed again and again of finally reaching their destination.

Now they are truly standing in the city of their ancestors. But Jerusalem does not look the way many had imagined it. The city still bears the marks of destruction. Stones lie scattered in many places, buildings are damaged, and little can be seen of its former glory.

The people could now immediately begin building houses or preparing fields. They could try to put their own lives back in order. But instead, they make a different decision.

They want to think about God first.

📖 The Biblical Story

🕊️ The First Important Step

The families have now settled in the towns and villages. Slowly, a new everyday life begins. But the people know that they have not returned only to live somewhere. They have returned because God has given them a new beginning.

That is why they gather together in Jerusalem. Men, women, and children come together. Many may not know one another very well yet, because they come from different families and places. But now they are united by one common goal.

In the middle of the ruins, they turn their attention to God.

Under the leadership of Jeshua, the high priest, and Zerubbabel, they begin a task that is especially important to them. Even before the temple is built, they set up the altar of God.

This may seem surprising. After all, there are many other things that are also urgent. But the people want to show that God should have first place in their lives.

The altar becomes a visible sign that they want to live again as God’s people.

🙏 Courage in an Uncertain Time

The people know that they are not alone in the land. Other nations live all around them. Not everyone is happy about their return.

Because of this, some of the returnees feel uncertain. Perhaps they wonder what the future will bring. Perhaps they worry about their families.

But precisely in this situation, they seek God’s nearness.

Day after day, they offer the sacrifices described in God’s law. In the morning and in the evening, the people come together. Smoke rises from the altar, and the prayers of the people are directed toward God.

While much around them still looks disordered, something new begins here: trust.

The people learn once again to direct their lives toward God.

🎉 A Special Feast

Soon the returnees celebrate one of Israel’s great feasts – the Feast of Tabernacles.

For many families, this moment must have been especially moving. Perhaps some had never experienced this feast in Jerusalem before. Others knew it only from the stories of their parents and grandparents.

Now they celebrate it together in the place God had chosen for his people.

Everywhere there is life. Families come together. Children watch the events with curiosity. Prayers are spoken, and the people remember God’s faithfulness in the past.

As they celebrate, hope grows. God had led his people through many difficult times. He had not forgotten them. And now he had brought them back.

The joy of this thought fills the hearts of many people.

🪵 The Preparations Begin

But the returnees know that a great task still lies ahead of them. The temple must be rebuilt.

So they begin with the preparations. Workers are organized, materials are gathered, and plans are made.

The wood from Lebanon is especially important. This valuable wood had already been used during the construction of the first temple in the time of Solomon. Now tree trunks are once again obtained and transported over long distances.

The people invest time, strength, and money in this project.

Everyone understands that it will not be easy. The rebuilding will require much patience.

But no one wants to give up before the work has even begun.

🏗️ A Great Day Full of Expectation

Finally, the moment arrives that many have been waiting for.

The foundations for the new temple are laid.

To outsiders, this may not look very impressive at first. They are only the first stones. The walls are not yet standing. The building is still far from finished.

But for the people, this day means much more.

With every stone, the hope grows that God’s house will one day stand among them again.

That is why the priests gather in their festive garments. The Levites take up their instruments. Trumpets sound, and the people begin to praise God.

Together they sing that God is good and that his love never ends.

Their voices echo across the construction site. Among the old ruins, praise is heard once again.

😢😊 Joy and Tears at the Same Time

While the people celebrate, something special happens.

Many cheer loudly with joy. They can hardly believe that the temple will finally be rebuilt.

But not everyone reacts in the same way.

Among those present are older people who had still seen the first temple before it was destroyed. When they now look at the new foundations, they are overwhelmed by memories.

They think of the times that are gone. They remember the magnificent temple that once stood there.

That is why some of them begin to weep.

Not because they are against the new beginning, but because they feel how much has been lost.

At the same time, the younger ones cheer with joy over what is now beginning.

So on this day, tears of joy and tears of remembrance mix together.

The Bible tells us that the voices could hardly be distinguished from one another. Cheering and weeping filled the air together.

It was a day full of emotions – a day no one would soon forget.

🌟 A New Beginning with Hope

When the day comes to an end, there is still no finished temple in Jerusalem. Much work still awaits the people.

But something important has already happened.

The new beginning has begun.

The people have put God first. They have built the altar, celebrated together, and taken the first steps toward rebuilding the temple.

What seems small today will one day become something great.

And that is often how God works: He begins with small steps, from which something beautiful later grows.

🌅 What This Chapter Shows

This chapter shows that God may have first place. Even before the people build their own houses, they turn their eyes toward him.

We also see that joy and sadness can sometimes exist at the same time. While some rejoice over the new beginning, others remember what has been lost. God understands both feelings.

🟣 Summary

The returnees first build the altar of God and begin offering sacrifices again. They celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles and prepare for the building of the temple. When the foundations are laid, many people cheer with joy, while others remember the past and weep. This is how the rebuilding of the temple begins.

💚 Message for Children Today

Sometimes great things begin with small steps. God does not expect everything to be finished immediately. What matters is taking the first step and trusting him.

We may also know this: God understands our joy just as much as our sadness.
