π΅οΈ Nehemiah Chapter 6 β A Trap for Nehemiah
β οΈ When someone wants to stop you
π Introduction
The wall around Jerusalem was almost finished. What many people had thought impossible had become reality. Stone by stone, the workers had rebuilt the destroyed sections. Despite mockery, threats, and many difficulties, the work had moved forward.
For Jerusalemβs enemies, the situation was becoming more and more serious. They had hoped the people would give up. But that was exactly what had not happened. Now only a little work remained before the wall would be completely finished.
So the enemies decided to try a new plan. If they could not stop the workers, they wanted to stop the man who was leading the whole project: Nehemiah.
This chapter tells how Nehemiah escapes several traps and still reaches his goal.
π The Biblical Story
π¨ A friendly invitation with a secret plan
When Sanballat, Tobiah, and the other opponents heard that the wall was almost finished, they sent a message to Nehemiah. They invited him to a meeting in a place called Ono.
At first glance, the invitation sounded friendly. Perhaps it looked as if they finally wanted to make peace or discuss important matters.
But Nehemiah realized that something was not right. Those men had caused him trouble again and again in the past. Why would they suddenly be his friends now?
So Nehemiah thought carefully. He did not let himself be deceived by nice words.
Finally, he understood that the invitation was a trap. His opponents wanted to harm him and lure him away from his important task.
So Nehemiah sent back a clear answer. He explained that he was busy with a great work and could not leave it.
The wall was more important than that meeting.
π The same temptation again and again
But the opponents did not give up. Four times they sent the same invitation.
Perhaps they hoped that Nehemiah would eventually get tired. Perhaps they believed he might change his mind if they asked often enough.
But each time they received the same answer.
Nehemiah remained firm in his decision.
He knew what his task was and did not allow himself to be distracted from it.
That was not always easy. Sometimes constant pressure can wear people down. But Nehemiah did not let the plans of his enemies determine his decisions.
His eyes remained fixed on the goal.
βοΈ A letter full of lies
When the invitations had no success, the opponents tried something else. This time they sent an open letter.
In it, they claimed that Nehemiah wanted to make himself king. They spread the rumor that Jerusalem wanted to rebel against the Persian Empire.
If such news reached the king, it could mean serious trouble for Nehemiah.
The opponents hoped to frighten him.
Perhaps they wanted him to think, βWhat if people believe these lies?β
But Nehemiah did not let himself be frightened this time either.
He answered that the claims were simply made up. None of it was true.
Then he did something he often did when difficulties came.
He prayed.
βNow strengthen my hands,β he asked God.
With this short prayer, he placed his worries in Godβs hands.
ποΈ Another trap
But the opponents still had not given up.
One day Nehemiah visited a man named Shemaiah. He told him that great danger was coming. He claimed that enemies would come to kill Nehemiah.
Then he made a suggestion. Nehemiah should hide in the temple to save his life.
Perhaps at first that sounded reasonable. Who would not try to protect himself from danger?
But Nehemiah quickly noticed that this, too, was a trap.
He knew that, as an ordinary man, he was not allowed simply to enter an area of the temple reserved only for priests.
If he did that, he would act against Godβs commandments.
He also recognized that God had not called him to run away out of fear.
So he rejected this suggestion as well.
Later it turned out that some opponents had paid Shemaiah for this false message.
𧱠The wall is completed
Despite all attempts to stop him, Nehemiah kept working.
The builders did not give up. Day after day, they placed stones on top of one another, repaired the final sections, and completed the work.
Finally, the great day came.
The wall was finished.
The people had needed only fifty-two days to complete this enormous work.
For everyone who had known the destroyed walls, it was hard to believe.
Where ruins had once lain, a strong protective wall now stood around Jerusalem.
The people could see what God had done through a determined people.
π² The opponents recognize Godβs hand
When the enemies heard that the work had been completed, they were deeply impressed. They had tried everything to prevent the construction.
They had mocked, threatened, spread rumors, and set traps.
But none of it had worked.
Finally, even the opponents had to recognize that this work was not merely a human achievement.
They saw that God had helped His people.
The people in Jerusalem had built, but God had given them strength, courage, and protection.
That is why the wall now stood firm and strong before everyoneβs eyes.
π A victory of perseverance
This chapter shows that great tasks often become especially difficult shortly before the goal is reached. Just as the wall was almost finished, the opponents tried with all their strength to stop Nehemiah.
But Nehemiah remained calm. He did not allow himself to be ruled by fear or lies. Again and again, he trusted God and focused on his task.
In the end, the wall was finished.
Not because there were no obstacles, but because the people kept working despite the obstacles.
In this way, Jerusalem was protected not only by stones, but also by the faith and faithfulness of the people who trusted God.
π What this chapter shows
This chapter shows that people are sometimes especially strongly discouraged shortly before reaching the goal. But God can help us remain steadfast.
We also learn from Nehemiah that wisdom means not accepting every invitation and not believing every voice.
π£ Summary
The opponents try several times to lure Nehemiah into traps. They send invitations, spread lies, and try to frighten him. But Nehemiah remains steadfast and trusts God. Finally, the wall of Jerusalem is completed in only 52 days, and even the enemies recognize that God has helped.
π Message for children today
When we do something good, difficulties may appear. But we do not have to give up. God can give us wisdom and courage.
It is also important not to believe everything others say, but to think carefully and trust God.
