After days full of tension, the decisive moment has now arrived. Esther has fasted, prayed, and waited for the right time. 𧡠Commentary
At the second banquet, King Ahasuerus once again asks Esther what her request is. Again, he promises to grant even great petitions. Now the moment Esther has been waiting for has come.
With great courage, she does not ask for wealth or influence, but for her own life and the life of her people. She explains to the king that a decree has been issued calling for her destruction and the destruction of all her people.
The king is shocked. He immediately asks who has dared to devise such a plan.
Then Esther points directly to Haman and says that this man is the enemy and adversary.
Suddenly, the entire situation changes. Haman, who until now had possessed power, now stands accused. Filled with anger, the king leaves the room and goes into the palace garden.
Haman realizes that his life is in danger. Desperate, he remains behind and begs Esther for mercy. When the king returns, he sees Haman lying near Estherβs couch. This makes the situation even worse.
For the king, it is now completely clear that Haman is guilty. At that moment, one of the servants remembers that Haman had built a high gallowsβoriginally intended for Mordecai, the man who had once saved the kingβs life.
Then the decision is made. Haman is executed on the very gallows he had prepared for Mordecai.
Thus, one of the great reversals in the book of Esther is fulfilled. The man who had planned the destruction of others falls through his own plans. His pride, hatred, and intrigues ultimately lead to his downfall.
At the end of the chapter, the kingβs anger subsides. Yet although Haman has been removed, the problem remains: the decree against the Jews is still valid. The actual deliverance of the people is still to come.
