Ezra chapter 10 forms the conclusion of the book of Ezra. After the moving prayer of repentance in chapter 9, the guilt of the people does not remain merely a topic for reflection. Now the question is what true repentance looks like. The chapter shows that spiritual renewal sometimes requires difficult decisions when people want to take God’s will seriously again.

While Ezra prays and weeps before the temple, his reaction does not go unnoticed. More and more people gather around him. Men, women, and children stand there and recognize that the situation is serious. Ezra’s grief makes clear how far the people have moved away from God’s commandments.
But this time it does not stop with concern. One of those present speaks up and expresses hope. Although great guilt is present, he sees a way back to repentance. This hope changes the atmosphere. Out of grief grows the willingness to take responsibility.
The people ask Ezra to take the lead. He himself had not caused the guilt, but his faithfulness to God makes him an important guide. Ezra rises and calls on those responsible to make a covenant with God and to begin taking concrete steps.
Then all Israel is called together to Jerusalem. Despite rain and difficult circumstances, the people gather. They stand trembling in the square — not only because of the weather, but also because of the seriousness of the matter.
Ezra speaks openly about the guilt of the people and calls them to repentance. Those assembled acknowledge their responsibility. At the same time, it becomes clear that the solution will take time. Therefore, investigations are carried out and individual cases are carefully examined.
The rest of the chapter describes the implementation of this decision. Names are mentioned, and it is documented who was willing to take responsibility and take the necessary steps.
For today’s readers, this section may seem difficult to understand. But the central concern of the chapter is clear: the people recognize that a real relationship with God does not consist only of words. True repentance is shown in concrete changes.
The book does not end with a great celebration or a spectacular miracle. It ends with people who are willing to take God’s will seriously and align their lives with it. This is precisely where the true hope of the book of Ezra lies.

In the middle of the dedication of the new altar, God sent a prophet.

🧵 Commentary
The man of God courageously stood before the king and proclaimed God’s judgment. Before all those present, he spoke of a future king named Josiah, who would one day destroy this altar.
As a sign, the altar split apart before the eyes of the people. The ashes were poured out.
Jeroboam reacted with anger and ordered the prophet’s arrest. But at that very moment, his outstretched hand became stiff.
Only when the prophet prayed for him did his hand become healthy again.
In this way, God showed both His power and His mercy. Even now, the door to repentance was still open.
But Jeroboam’s heart remained hard.
