βPeople look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.β
β 1 Samuel 16:7
π Devotional of the Day
As human beings, we judge many things by what we see. We pay attention to words, actions, successes, or mistakes. Often, within a few moments, we form an opinion about other people. But our view is limited. We see only a small part of reality.
God, however, sees deeper. He sees not only a personβs behavior, but also the thoughts, motives, struggles, and intentions of the heart. That is why His judgment is perfectly just.
When Samuel was to anoint the future king of Israel, he first looked at outward appearances. Eliab seemed strong, worthy, and suitable to him. But God reminded him that His way of seeing is different. It is not outward appearance that decides, but the heart.
This truth is especially important when we think about the judgment. God does not judge us superficially. He knows the whole story of our lives. He knows the struggles no one sees. He knows the prayers no one has heard. He sees the faith that often remains hidden.
For some people, this thought may feel unsettling. But for Godβs children, it is a great comfort. The Lord knows us better than anyone elseβand still loves us.
β¨ A Just Judge
People can be mistaken. They can misunderstand, judge wrongly, or act unjustly. God never does.
In the heavenly judgment, nothing will be based on rumors, assumptions, or outward impressions. God sees the truth completely.
Ellen G. White wrote:
βGod judges people not by their outward appearance, but by the condition of their heart.β
(Christβs Object Lessons, p. 74)
Therefore, we may trust that His judgment will be perfectly just.
πΏ Opening the Heart to God
Because God knows our hearts, we do not need to hide anything. We may come before Him honestly. He already knows our weaknesses, doubts, and mistakes.
The gospel invites us not to build a religious façade, but to live in a genuine relationship with Christ. God is not looking for perfect people. He is looking for people who are willing to be changed by Him.
Ellen G. White wrote:
βThe Lord does not first require outward forms, but the surrender of the heart.β
(Steps to Christ, p. 43)
ποΈ Changed From the Inside Out
True discipleship begins in the heart. That is where the Holy Spirit works. That is where trust, love, and obedience are born.
When God changes the heart, this will also become visible in life. Good works will then not be an attempt to gain Godβs approval, but the fruit of a relationship with Him.
In the end, the judgment will reveal what Godβs grace was able to accomplish in a personβs life.
π Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
thank You for knowing me completely.
You see not only my outward life, but also my heart.
Help me to live honestly before You and to hide nothing from You.
Change my thoughts, my desires, and my motives.
Let Your Spirit work in me, so that my life may reflect Your love.
Amen.
