π Topic 1: The Fear of the Lord
π‘ The Beginning of True Wisdom
Introduction
Before the book of Proverbs speaks about words, decisions, family, work, money, character, temptation, or relationships, it first shows us the most important foundation: the fear of the Lord.
βThe fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.β Proverbs 1:7
This verse is like a door through which we enter the whole book of Proverbs. Anyone who wants to understand Proverbs must begin here. In the Bible, wisdom is not only clever thinking, good life experience, or skillful action. True wisdom begins with a right relationship with God.
The fear of the Lord does not mean that we must run away from God. It does not mean being afraid of a harsh, cold, or distant God. It means reverence, trust, respect, and the willingness to take God more seriously than our own opinion, the voice of society, or the pressure of other people.
A person who fears the Lord does not only ask: βWhat is comfortable?β
They ask: βWhat is right before God?β
They do not only ask: βWhat benefits me?β
They ask: βWhat honors the Lord?β
They do not live only according to feelings, habits, or human logic. They seek Godβs will because they know: Without God, a person can know many things and still go the wrong way.
Especially in our time, we need this kind of wisdom. We live in a world full of information, opinions, and voices. Every day we hear advice about how to become successful, happy, strong, free, or popular. But not every voice leads to life. Not every path that sounds modern is good. Not every decision that feels right brings us closer to God.
That is why wisdom begins with reverence for the Lord. It realigns our heart. It reminds us that God is the Creator, that His Word is truth, and that our life does not belong to ourselves. We are invited to live with Him, to learn from Him, and to let ourselves be shaped by Him.
For us as Christians, the fear of the Lord is also closely connected with preparing for the return of Jesus. Those who wait for Christ do not live indifferently. They ask daily: Lord, how should my character grow? How should I speak? How should I decide? How should I deal with my family, my time, my money, and my body?
Proverbs shows us that faith is not visible only in worship. It shows itself in everyday life. In small decisions. In quiet thoughts. In words that no one can take back. In moments when we are tempted to act proudly, harshly, comfortably, or impatiently.
This first topic invites us to return to the foundation. Before we speak about practical wisdom, we need a heart that honors God. Because without the fear of the Lord, wisdom quickly becomes self-confidence. But with the fear of the Lord, our life is guided from above.
So the question is not only: βDo I want to become wiser?β
The deeper question is: βAm I willing to truly put God first?β
Because that is where everything begins.
Not with human cleverness.
Not with experience.
Not with success.
Not with education.
But with a heart that says:
Lord, I need Your wisdom. Lead me. Teach me. Change me.
