β οΈ Esther Chapter 3 β A Dangerous Enemy Appears
π When Pride Becomes Dangerous
π Introduction
In the palace of Susa, everything seems calm at first. Esther has become queen, Mordecai continues to fulfill his duty at the kingβs gate, and life in the great Persian Empire goes on as usual.
But sometimes a great danger begins very quietly. Not with a war, not with a storm, and not with a loud attack, but with pride in a personβs heart.
In this chapter, a man appears who becomes more and more powerful. His name is Haman. Many people bow down before him because the king has commanded it. But one man does not.
From this one decision, a dangerous plan arises that will soon threaten the entire Jewish people.
π The Biblical Story
π Haman Becomes Powerful
After some time, King Ahasuerus promoted a man named Haman to a very high position. He gave him power and honor, so that Haman became more important than many other princes in the kingdom.
For Haman, this was a great rise. Everywhere, people treated him with respect. When he passed through the kingβs gate, the servants bowed down before him, just as the king had commanded.
Haman quickly became used to being admired. He expected everyone to show him honor. But power can become dangerous when a person grows proud and hardens his heart.
And that is exactly what happened to Haman.
π One Man Remains Standing
Mordecai was also sitting at the kingβs gate. He saw how the others bowed down before Haman. But Mordecai did not.
The kingβs servants noticed this and spoke to him about it. To them, it was incomprehensible that Mordecai did not follow the kingβs command. Again and again, they asked him why he did not bow down.
Mordecai remained firm in his decision. He explained to them that he was a Jew. His faith in God guided his actions, and he did not want to give Haman the honor that belonged only to God.
The servants watched to see whether Mordecai would change his attitude. But he remained steadfast.
Finally, Haman himself became aware of it.
π‘ Wounded Pride Turns into Hatred
When Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow down before him, he became very angry. To him, Mordecaiβs behavior was more than a small insult. It wounded his pride.
Haman had become used to people admiring him. But now there stood a man who would not be intimidated.
When Haman learned that Mordecai was a Jew, his anger grew even greater. He did not want to punish only Mordecai. His hatred grew so much that he decided to have the entire Jewish people destroyed.
That is how dangerous pride can become when it is not stopped. From one wounded feeling came an evil plan against many innocent people.
π² A Dark Plan Is Prepared
Haman did not want to leave his plan to chance. He had the so-called Pur cast, a kind of lot, in order to choose a certain day.
The day that was chosen lay many months in the future. This gave Haman enough time to prepare everything.
While Haman believed he could carefully arrange his plans, he had no idea that God saw everything. Even though Godβs name is not directly mentioned in the book of Esther, his guidance is hidden but present in the story.
Haman thought he could decide the fate of an entire people. But he did not know that God was already preparing another way.
ποΈ Haman Deceives the King
Now Haman went to the king. He spoke skillfully and carefully. He said that a certain people lived scattered throughout the kingdom, with laws different from those of the other peoples.
But Haman did not honestly say why he hated this people. He hid the fact that everything had begun with his wounded pride toward Mordecai.
Instead, he presented the Jews as if they were a danger to the kingdom. He wanted the king to believe that it would be better to eliminate this people.
Haman also promised to give a large amount of silver into the royal treasury. With this, he wanted to make his proposal even more convincing.
King Ahasuerus did not examine the matter carefully enough. He gave Haman his signet ring. With it, Haman received the power to write a command in the name of the king.
π A Law Full of Terror
Soon the kingβs scribes were called. They wrote Hamanβs command in many languages and for all the provinces of the kingdom.
The content was terrifying. On one fixed day, all the Jews throughout the Persian Empire were to be killed. Men, women, and children were threatened.
After that, the letters were sealed and sent out in all directions by swift messengers. From city to city, the news spread.
For the Jewish families, this decree must have been like a dark shadow. Suddenly their future was in danger. Parents thought of their children, children saw the fear of the adults, and many people did not know what to do.
In Susa itself there was confusion. While the king and Haman sat down to drink, the city could hardly understand what had just happened.
π When the Danger Grows Greater and Greater
At the end of this chapter, everything seems very dark. Haman has received power. A dangerous law has been written. The Jewish people are threatened, and Esther does not yet know what has happened.
But the story is not over.
God had already brought Esther into the palace. Mordecai was at the kingβs gate at the right time. And even though no one could see the whole plan, Godβs rescue was already beginning to be prepared in secret.
Sometimes a situation looks hopeless. But God sees farther than human beings. And in the story of Esther, it will soon become visible that he has not forgotten his people.
π What This Chapter Shows
This chapter shows how dangerous pride and hatred can become. Haman allowed his wounded pride to turn into an evil plan against many people.
The story also reminds us that God is at work even when everything looks dark and no one can yet see a way out.
π£ Summary
Haman becomes a very powerful man in the Persian Empire. Everyone is supposed to bow down before him, but Mordecai does not, because he wants to remain faithful to God. Haman becomes angry and plans not only Mordecaiβs death, but the destruction of all the Jews. He deceives the king and has a dangerous law written. The Jewish people fall into great danger.
π Message for Children Today
Pride and hatred can destroy a great deal. That is why it is important to watch over our hearts and not allow anger to rule us.
