π± GROWING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
π§οΈ Lesson 11: Setbacks
π 11.7 Questions
β¨ Trusting God and holding on to him in times of setbacks
- How has the setback you are currently experiencing, or have experienced in the past, influenced your view of God? How can you recognize Godβs true character more clearly?
- When was the last time you prayed that Godβs voice would be stronger in your life than the voice of the enemy? Remember that the thief, Satan, comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but God gives life in abundance (John 10:10).
- Is your heart humble? Do you trust that, despite all difficulties, God is still the sovereign Lord and guides your life? If not, how can you personally learn this humble trust in Godβs goodness and love?
- Do you remain anchored daily in Godβs Word? Ask God to rekindle your first love for him when you go through difficult times.
- When was the last time you turned to God in prayer as your Comforter and Counselor, trusting that he keeps his promise never to forget or abandon you (Hebrews 13:5)?
- If your faith is weak, pray: βI believe; help my unbelief!β (Mark 9:24). Surround yourselves with people who encourage you instead of discouraging you.
- The world does not always care for the weak, the uninformed, the wounded, and the broken. Godβs message, βWhen you are weak, I am strong,β is a message that can radically change peopleβs lives. Think about whom you can encourage today with this message.
π 1. Introduction
Setbacks are part of every personβs life. Illness, loss, disappointments, or unexpected crises can shake our faith and raise many questions. Especially in such times, it becomes clear what our trust is truly founded on. The lessons of this quarter have reminded us again and again that God is present even in the darkest hours. These questions help us reflect on our journey of faith and deepen our relationship with God.
π 2. The Biblical Foundation
The Bible shows that Godβs children repeatedly experienced difficult trials:
- Job lost almost everything and still held on to God.
- David cried out to God for help in his psalms.
- The disciples on the road to Emmaus struggled with disappointment and hopelessness.
- Paul learned that Godβs power is made perfect in his weakness.
Godβs promise remains firm:
βI will never leave you nor forsake you.β (Hebrews 13:5)
π 3. Connection to Today
Many Christians today face similar challenges. The voices of fear, doubt, and discouragement are often loud. At the same time, God speaks to us through his Word, through the Holy Spirit, and through other believers. The decisive question is: Which voice do we allow to shape our heart the most? In times of crisis, it is often decided whether we move away from God or cling to him even more closely.
π‘ 4. Central Message of the Questions
π Setbacks should not lead us away from God, but teach us to trust him more deeply and bind ourselves more closely to him.
βοΈ 5. Spiritual Focus Points of the Answers
Question 1: How do setbacks influence our view of God?
Suffering can either distort or deepen our view of God. Many people ask themselves in times of crisis:
- Does God still love me?
- Has God forgotten me?
- Why does he not intervene?
Yet the Bible shows that Godβs character does not depend on our circumstances. At the cross, we see Godβs true nature: love, grace, faithfulness, and self-sacrifice. Setbacks do not change Godβs character; rather, they reveal how much we need to learn to trust him even without visible answers.
Question 2: Do I listen more to Godβs voice or to the voice of the enemy?
In John 10:10, Satan is described as a thief who wants to destroy. His tools are often:
- fear,
- doubt,
- hopelessness,
- self-accusation.
Godβs voice, on the other hand, leads to:
- peace,
- hope,
- truth,
- trust.
That is why daily prayer is so important. Whoever asks God to hear his voice more clearly opens their heart to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Question 3: Do I have humble trust in Godβs guidance?
Humility does not mean weakness. Humility means recognizing that God sees more than we do. Job learned exactly this lesson. In the end, he did not understand every detail of his suffering, but he recognized the greatness of God. True trust grows where we value Godβs goodness more highly than our limited perspective.
π 6. Deeper Application of the Questions
Question 4: Am I anchored daily in Godβs Word?
Especially in times of crisis, people tend to neglect spiritual habits. Yet it is precisely then that we need Godβs Word the most.
The Bible:
- strengthens our faith,
- corrects wrong thoughts,
- reminds us of Godβs promises,
- directs our eyes to Christ.
If our first love has grown cold, we may ask God to ignite our heart anew.
Question 5: Do I seek God as Comforter and Counselor?
Many people first turn to:
- friends,
- social media,
- their own thoughts,
- human solutions.
All of this can be helpful, but it does not replace Godβs presence. The Bible describes God as:
- Comforter,
- Shepherd,
- Father,
- Counselor.
Those who bring their worries to God first often experience a peace that no human solution can give.
Question 6: What do I do when my faith is weak?
The father in Mark 9 prayed:
βI believe; help my unbelief!β
This is one of the most honest prayers in the Bible.
God does not expect perfect faith. He expects sincere faith. Weak faith that clings to Jesus is stronger than great self-confidence without Christ.
That is why fellowship is important. God gives us brothers and sisters in faith who can carry us when our own strength is not enough.
Question 7: Whom can I encourage today?
Many people carry invisible burdens:
- loneliness,
- illness,
- worries,
- disappointments.
Perhaps today we will meet someone who needs exactly the hope that we ourselves have received from God.
Paul reminds us:
God comforts us so that we can comfort others.
Our own setbacks can become a tool through which God gives hope to other people.
π§ 7. Application in Everyday Life
Practical steps:
- Begin each day with prayer and Bible reading.
- Consciously ask God for spiritual discernment.
- Remember previous experiences of his faithfulness.
- Seek fellowship with believing people.
- Intentionally encourage someone who is suffering this week.
β 8. Personal Reflection Question
Which of these seven questions speaks most strongly into my current life situation, and what concrete step does God want from me today?
π 9. Closing Thought
Setbacks do not have to destroy our faith. In Godβs hand, they can become opportunities to know him more deeply and to experience his faithfulness anew. When we cling to Christ, we will discover that his power becomes visible precisely in our weakness.
