πŸ‘‘ 1 Samuel 3 – Speak, Lord: God’s call to a listening heart
✨ How a sleeping boy becomes the first prophet of a new era

🌐 Read online here

πŸ”΅ Introduction

1 Samuel 3 is one of the most powerful calling stories in the Bible.
In a time of spiritual darkness, when β€œthe word of the LORD was rare,” God does not choose an experienced priest, not an elder, not a warrior β€” but a boy.

Samuel, serving in the sanctuary, hears a voice he cannot yet understand.
But this call in the night changes his life β€” and the history of Israel.

This chapter leads us deep into the mystery of divine calling:
God speaks, and He seeks people who listen.

══════════════════════════

🟑 Commentary

The night in Shiloh is quiet.
The temple is softly lit; the β€œlamp of God” is still burning β€” a sign that God’s service has not gone out, even though the spiritual situation seems dark.
Eli, now old and nearly blind, is resting in his room.
Samuel lies not far away, near the ark of the covenant β€” closest to the heart of the sanctuary.

Suddenly, a voice cuts through the silence: β€œSamuel!”
The boy jumps up and runs to Eli.
But Eli did not call him.
It happens twice. Samuel does not understand β€” and Eli only slowly realizes what is happening.

The third time, the old priest understands: the LORD is calling the boy.
He teaches Samuel the words that shape a listening heart:

β€œSpeak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.”

When Samuel lies down again, the LORD comes β€” for the first time personally present in Samuel’s life.
Not just a voice from afar, but a presence in the room.
And God speaks.

The message is heavy:
God announces judgment on Eli’s house.
The sins of his sons, and Eli’s failure to restrain them, have filled the measure.

Samuel lies awake until morning.
How can he tell this word to Eli?
But Eli calls him β€” and Samuel hides nothing.
Eli accepts the judgment:
β€œHe is the LORD; let Him do what seems good to Him.”

From that day on, Samuel’s life is changed.
He grows, the LORD is with him, and β€œnone of his words fell to the ground” β€” everything he speaks carries divine confirmation.
All Israel recognizes him as a prophet of the LORD.

The boy who served in the sanctuary has become a man of God.

🟒 Summary

  • Samuel serves in the sanctuary during a time of spiritual darkness.

  • God calls him three times before Eli realizes that God Himself is speaking.

  • Samuel learns the most important prayer of a servant of God:
β€œSpeak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.”

  • God reveals to Samuel the coming judgment on Eli’s house.

  • Samuel faithfully delivers the message, even though it is difficult.

  • He grows into a prophet whose words are recognized by all Israel.

πŸ“’ Message for us today

1️⃣ God often calls those who do not expect it
Samuel is young and inexperienced β€” yet open.
God does not seek the perfect, but the listening.

2️⃣ Spiritual sensitivity must be learned
Samuel hears the voice, but Eli understands its meaning.
God uses older, experienced people to guide the younger.

3️⃣ Obedience also means faithfully speaking hard messages
Samuel could have remained silent.
True faithfulness is shown when God’s word is difficult.

4️⃣ A listening heart changes the future
An entire nation recognizes that God has called a new prophet.
Calling begins in silence β€” and bears fruit on a grand scale.

5️⃣ God’s word never goes out, even when the lamp is almost extinguished
Even in times of spiritual crisis, God lights new servants.

══════════════════════════

πŸ’¬ Thought for reflection

Do I listen β€” or do I simply expect God to be silent?

God still speaks today:
through His Word, His Spirit, through situations, people, and silence.
The question is not whether God speaks β€”
but whether we, like Samuel, say:

β€œSpeak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.”

Joshua’s selflessness – The last leader asks last
True greatness is shown not in claiming, but in humility

πŸ”΅ Introduction

Joshua, the leader of the nation, has conquered the land, guided the people, granted forgiveness, and fought battles. And then? After everyone has received their inheritance, he himself makes a request β€” small, simple, and full of dignity.

══════════════════════════

🟑 Commentary

Joshua could have secured the best portion of the land for himself. But he waits until everyone has been provided for. Only then does he ask for one city: Timnath-serah. No royal seat, no vast inheritance β€” simply β€œthe portion that remains.”

This is the mark of a true servant.
He placed himself last β€” and remained an example of humility and devotion to the very end.

══════════════════════════

🟒 Summary

Joshua receives his inheritance last β€” not out of weakness, but out of greatness.
His life stands in contrast to the sense of entitlement shown by some of the tribes.

══════════════════════════

πŸ“’ Message for us today

Humility is not loss β€” it is true strength.
Those who are willing to serve and to wait often receive β€œthe best of what remains.”

πŸ’¬ Thought for reflection

How do you deal with your own claims and expectations?
Do you grow uneasy when others receive before you?
Or can you, like Joshua, serve β€” in quietness and dignity?
