π 1 Samuel 3 β Speak, Lord: Godβs call to a listening heart
β¨ How a sleeping boy becomes the first prophet of a new era

π΅ Introduction
1 Samuel 3 is one of the most powerful calling stories in the Bible.
In a time of spiritual darkness, when βthe word of the LORD was rare,β God does not choose an experienced priest, not an elder, not a warrior β but a boy.
Samuel, serving in the sanctuary, hears a voice he cannot yet understand.
But this call in the night changes his life β and the history of Israel.
This chapter leads us deep into the mystery of divine calling:
God speaks, and He seeks people who listen.

π‘ Commentary
The night in Shiloh is quiet.
The temple is softly lit; the βlamp of Godβ is still burning β a sign that Godβs service has not gone out, even though the spiritual situation seems dark.
Eli, now old and nearly blind, is resting in his room.
Samuel lies not far away, near the ark of the covenant β closest to the heart of the sanctuary.
Suddenly, a voice cuts through the silence: βSamuel!β
The boy jumps up and runs to Eli.
But Eli did not call him.
It happens twice. Samuel does not understand β and Eli only slowly realizes what is happening.
The third time, the old priest understands: the LORD is calling the boy.
He teaches Samuel the words that shape a listening heart:
βSpeak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.β
When Samuel lies down again, the LORD comes β for the first time personally present in Samuelβs life.
Not just a voice from afar, but a presence in the room.
And God speaks.
The message is heavy:
God announces judgment on Eliβs house.
The sins of his sons, and Eliβs failure to restrain them, have filled the measure.
Samuel lies awake until morning.
How can he tell this word to Eli?
But Eli calls him β and Samuel hides nothing.
Eli accepts the judgment:
βHe is the LORD; let Him do what seems good to Him.β
From that day on, Samuelβs life is changed.
He grows, the LORD is with him, and βnone of his words fell to the groundβ β everything he speaks carries divine confirmation.
All Israel recognizes him as a prophet of the LORD.
The boy who served in the sanctuary has become a man of God.

π’ Message for us today
1οΈβ£ God often calls those who do not expect it
Samuel is young and inexperienced β yet open.
God does not seek the perfect, but the listening.
2οΈβ£ Spiritual sensitivity must be learned
Samuel hears the voice, but Eli understands its meaning.
God uses older, experienced people to guide the younger.
3οΈβ£ Obedience also means faithfully speaking hard messages
Samuel could have remained silent.
True faithfulness is shown when Godβs word is difficult.
4οΈβ£ A listening heart changes the future
An entire nation recognizes that God has called a new prophet.
Calling begins in silence β and bears fruit on a grand scale.
5οΈβ£ Godβs word never goes out, even when the lamp is almost extinguished
Even in times of spiritual crisis, God lights new servants.

π¬ Thought for reflection
Do I listen β or do I simply expect God to be silent?
God still speaks today:
through His Word, His Spirit, through situations, people, and silence.
The question is not whether God speaks β
but whether we, like Samuel, say:
βSpeak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.β
