πͺ An Open Door
β¨ When Prayer Leads to Courageous Action
π Read online here
π Introduction
After Nehemiah brought Jerusalemβs distress before God in chapter 1, the next phase now begins. Prayer alone was not the goal; it was the preparation for action. In Nehemiah chapter 2, we see how God opens a door that, humanly speaking, would have been almost unimaginable.

𧡠Commentary
Several months have passed since Nehemiah received the news about Jerusalem. During this time he has prayed, fasted, and waited for Godβs guidance. Now the decisive moment arrives.
When Nehemiah brings wine to King Artaxerxes, the king notices his sadness. This is unusual, because servants were not supposed to show a downcast mood in the kingβs presence. Nehemiah becomes afraid, because a wrong impression could have serious consequences.
The king asks him the reason for his sadness. Nehemiah explains that the city of his ancestors is destroyed and its gates have been burned. When the king asks what he wants, Nehemiah silently prays to God and then answers boldly.
He asks for permission to travel to Jerusalem and rebuild the city.
To his surprise, the king agrees. Even more, he gives him letters for the governors of the provinces and provides him with materials for the gates and walls. What Nehemiah had carried in prayer for months now begins to become reality.
After his arrival in Jerusalem, he first rests for a few days. Then, at night, he carries out a secret inspection of the destroyed walls. He wants to see the situation for himself before making his plans known.
The destruction is enormous. In some places the rubble is so great that his mount cannot pass through. Nehemiah recognizes the full extent of the task.
But instead of becoming discouraged, his determination grows.
Finally, he gathers the leading men of Jerusalem and tells them about Godβs guidance and the kingβs support. His words give the people new courage. Together they decide to begin the rebuilding.
Not everyone is pleased about this. Some opponents mock the idea and try to ridicule the project. But Nehemiah does not allow himself to be intimidated. He answers with confidence that God will grant them success.
The chapter ends with an important insight: God moved not only Nehemiahβs heart, but also the hearts of many other people. From a prayer comes a calling; from a vision, a shared work.

𧡠Commentary
The broken altar. The paralyzed hand. The healing. The death of the prophet.
Each of these events could have led Jeroboam to repentance. But he ignored them all.
Instead, he continued appointing arbitrary people as priests and promoted idolatry.
His personal sin became a national tragedy. The Bible repeatedly connects Israelβs later downfall with the βsins of Jeroboam.β
A hardened heart recognizes Godβs warnings but does not accept them.
In this way, Jeroboam not only became guilty himself, but also led many others with him along the same path.
