📍 Introduction
Job responds to Bildad’s speech. He agrees with him on one point: God is perfectly just and infinitely powerful. Yet this very truth leads Job to a new question. How can a human being stand before such a holy God? Job chapter 9 describes the deep struggle of a man who recognizes God’s greatness while at the same time feeling his own limitations.

🧵 Commentary
Job begins his reply by acknowledging that God is righteous. No one can contend with God and be proved right. God’s wisdom and power surpass all human understanding.
He describes God as the Creator who moves mountains, shakes the earth, and created the stars. The sun, the moon, and the constellations are under His rule. God’s greatness is revealed throughout all creation.
For this very reason, Job feels so small. Even if he were convinced of his innocence, he could not stand before God as one person would stand before another in court. God’s holiness and power are immeasurably greater than anything human.
Job sees his situation as hopeless. He does not understand why this suffering has come upon him. Although he is unaware of any deliberate sin, he feels unable to defend himself before God.
Especially moving is his longing for a mediator. Job wishes for someone who could stand between him and God—someone who could unite both sides and bring peace. He says that there is no arbitrator who could lay a hand on both of them.
These words are among the most significant statements in the book. Job senses that humanity needs a mediator. From a Christian perspective, they already point to Jesus Christ, who would later be revealed as the Mediator between God and humanity.
Despite all his despair, Job does not lose faith in God’s greatness. He does not understand God’s actions, but he acknowledges His power. His struggle is not against God but against his inability to understand his own situation.
Job chapter 9 shows that reverence for God and honest questions can exist side by side. True humility does not mean having no questions, but acknowledging God’s greatness even when we do not understand His ways.

God’s greatness surpasses our understanding. At the same time, we do not have to remain distant from Him, because in Jesus Christ, God Himself has given us the Mediator for whom Job longed. Therefore, we may come before God with confidence—even with our questions and our pain.
