🐪 Job Chapter 1 – When Everything Seems Lost

🌿 A man who remains faithful to God

🌅 Introduction

A very long time ago, there lived a man named Job. He lived in the land of Uz and was known far beyond his homeland. Many people knew his name, because Job was not only rich and respected. Above all, he was a person who loved God and wanted to trust Him with all his heart.

Job owned large herds of sheep, camels, oxen, and donkeys. Many male and female servants worked for him, and his house was full of life. But the most valuable thing in Job’s life was not his animals or his possessions. It was his family.

He had seven sons and three daughters. They often came together, celebrated joyfully with one another, and enjoyed time as a family. Job was happy about this. At the same time, he always remembered that God was just as important for his children as He was for him.

No one could have guessed that soon everything would change. A difficult test was approaching. And although Job knew nothing about it, God already saw the whole story.

📖 The Biblical Story

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A Happy Family

Job’s children got along well with one another. The brothers invited one another to feasts, and their sisters were always there too. These were days full of joy, with laughter, conversation, and meals shared together.

When the days of celebration were over, Job often thought for a long time about his children. He loved them very much and wished that they would always remain close to God.

That is why he got up early in the morning and offered sacrifices to God for each of his children. Perhaps, Job thought, they had done or said something that did not please God. He wanted to pray for them and ask God for forgiveness.

This showed how much Job loved his family. He did not only care that his children had enough food or nice clothes. It was even more important to him that they remained connected to God.

☁️ An Invisible Conversation

While Job was living peacefully with his family, something happened that no person on earth could see.

In heaven, the angels came before God. Satan also appeared there.

God asked him where he had come from.

Satan answered that he had been roaming around the earth.

Then God spoke about Job. He said that there was hardly anyone like him. Job lived honestly, honored God, and wanted to avoid evil.

But Satan disagreed. He claimed that Job served God only because God had richly blessed and protected him.

“Take everything away from him,” Satan said, “and he will surely no longer remain faithful to You.”

God knew that Job’s love for Him was real. Therefore, He allowed Satan to touch Job’s possessions. But Job himself was not allowed to be harmed.

Job knew nothing about all this.

He began that day like any other.

🏃 The First Messenger

While Job’s children were once again celebrating together, the servants were working outside in the fields. The oxen were plowing the land, and the donkeys were grazing nearby.

Suddenly, robbers attacked.

They took the animals and killed the servants.

Only one man was able to escape.

Completely out of breath, he ran to Job and reported what had happened.

Job had barely heard the terrible news when the next messenger was already approaching.

🔥 More and More Bad News

The second messenger reported that fire had fallen from heaven. The sheep and many servants had died.

While this man was still speaking, the third messenger came running.

He told Job that robbers had stolen the camels and killed the servants.

Job heard one terrible message after another.

It seemed as if everything he owned was disappearing within just a few hours.

But the worst was still to come.

💔 The Hardest News

The fourth messenger came with tears streaming down his face.

Even before he began to speak, Job sensed that something terrible must have happened.

The man told him that Job’s sons and daughters had been celebrating together. Suddenly, a powerful storm swept over the house. The building collapsed.

None of the children survived.

For a moment, it seemed as if the world stood still.

The man who still had a large family and countless herds in the morning had lost almost everything by evening.

No father can easily imagine how great that pain must have been.

Job’s heart was full of sorrow.

🙏 Job’s Amazing Response

Job tore his clothes as a sign of his deep grief and shaved his head. That was how people showed their sorrow at that time.

But then Job did something no one would have expected.

He fell to his knees.

He did not accuse God.

He did not become bitter.

Instead, he prayed.

He said:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.”

These words do not mean that Job felt no sadness. Quite the opposite. His heart was broken.

But in the middle of his pain, he held on to God.

He did not understand why all this had happened.

Yet he decided to trust God anyway.

🌟 A Faith That Remains Firm

At the end of this chapter, Job owns almost nothing anymore. His herds are gone. His servants are dead. His beloved children are no longer with him.

For many people, this would have meant turning their backs on God.

But Job chooses differently.

The Bible clearly says that, despite everything, Job did not sin against God or blame Him.

This is how one of the most moving stories in the whole Bible begins.

Job does not yet understand why he has to experience all this. But God has not abandoned him.

And soon it will become clear that the story is far from over.

🌅 What This Chapter Shows

This chapter shows that trusting God is not only important in good times. Job lost almost everything, yet he still held on to God.

The story also reminds us that we do not always understand why difficult things happen. God sees more than we can see and knows the whole story.

🟣 Summary
