Series: GROWING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD with Pastor Mark Finley

βš–οΈ Lesson 9: Sin, the Gospel, and the Law
✨ Sin separates us from God β€” but through Jesus we find forgiveness, transformation, and new life

Introduction:

Every person experiences the struggle between right and wrong, between God’s will and personal desires. The Bible shows that sin is not merely wrong behavior, but a power that seeks to destroy our relationship with God. That is why God gave His law: to reveal His character, His love, and His path to life. At the same time, the law makes it clear that we need redemption and forgiveness, which are only possible through Jesus Christ. The gospel shows us that God loves us despite our guilt and wants to save us through His grace. This lesson invites us to understand how the law and the gospel belong together and how genuine faith transforms our minds, our hearts, and our daily lives.

πŸ•ΈοΈ 9.1 Distractions and Temptations
The enemy seeks to weaken our relationship with God not only through open sin, but often through distractions

The story of Samson shows that even people with a special calling can fall when they neglect their relationship with God and play with temptation. Samson trusted more in his own strength than in God’s guidance, and this eventually led to his downfall. Even today, the enemy often works not only through obvious sins, but through distractions that consume our time, attention, and energy. Things like work, social media, entertainment, or worries can slowly push God out of the center of our lives. Jesus, however, gave us a different example: despite exhaustion and pressure, He continually sought fellowship with His Father through prayer. This lesson reminds us that we can remain spiritually strong only if we seek God’s Word daily and place our relationship with Him first.

🧱 9.2 Strongholds in My Relationship with God
Sin often begins in the heart and can slowly block our relationship with God

Jesus and Paul make it clear that the greatest dangers to our spiritual lives often arise not externally, but internally. Pride, self-confidence, lust, bitterness, anger, or a critical spirit can become walls standing between us and God. Samson did not fall suddenly, but step by step, because he underestimated his weaknesses and ignored God’s warnings. Therefore, Jesus calls us to take sin radically seriously and remove everything that draws us away from Him. This is not only about outward behavior, but about the condition of our hearts and thoughts. This lesson reminds us that true discipleship requires humility, self-examination, and the daily decision to place God above our own desires and feelings.

πŸ“œ 9.3 The Law
God’s law not only reveals our sin, but also reveals His love and character

The Bible describes sin as transgression of God’s law and makes it clear that the law acts like a mirror, revealing our true spiritual condition. Without God’s standard, we would often not even recognize how much we need His help and forgiveness. At the same time, the law not only reveals our failures, but also God’s nature, His order, and His love. Jesus summarized the Ten Commandments in two great principles: love for God and love for one’s neighbor. Therefore, God’s law was not given to restrict us, but to protect our relationships and show us the path to life. Whoever follows God’s commandments out of love discovers that they are not a burden, but help, guidance, and freedom.

✝️ 9.4 The Law and the Gospel
The law reveals our sin β€” the gospel reveals God’s salvation through Jesus Christ

Jesus made it clear that He did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it and reveal its true meaning. God’s law reveals His character, His love, and His desire to protect our relationship with Him and with others. At the same time, the law also reveals our guilt and shows us that we cannot save ourselves. That is precisely why the gospel is inseparably connected to the law: through Jesus’ death on the cross, God offers forgiveness, grace, and justification to all who believe. Whoever loves Jesus desires to keep God’s commandments β€” not in order to be saved, but because they have already been saved by God’s grace. This truth protects us from legalism and reminds us that our hope rests not on our own achievements, but solely on Christ.

πŸ›€οΈ 9.5 Knowing and Doing
True faith is shown not only in knowing about God, but in living with Him

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus makes it clear that merely knowing about God or using religious words is not enough. People may say β€œLord, Lord” and still not have a genuine relationship with Christ if their lives are not shaped by His will. The Bible emphasizes the importance of truth and knowledge, but this knowledge is meant to transform our hearts and shape our character. Whoever truly knows and loves God will desire to obey Him and align their life with Him. Therefore, Jesus compares the obedient person to a wise man who builds his house on solid rock. This lesson reminds us that genuine faith becomes visible when God’s Word is not only heard, but also lived out in practice.

🌟 9.6 Summary
God’s law reveals our sin β€” the gospel reveals the way to salvation through Jesus Christ

This lesson makes it clear that the great controversy also takes place in our personal lives, especially through temptations, distractions, and hidden sins of the heart. God’s law reveals not only our guilt, but also His loving character and His desire to protect our relationships. At the same time, the gospel shows that we are not saved by keeping the law, but solely through the grace of Jesus Christ. Genuine faith therefore unites law and gospel: whoever loves Jesus desires to do His will and align life with God’s Word. Jesus also emphasized that knowledge alone is not enough, but that true faith becomes visible in daily actions. Whoever builds their life on Christ finds a firm foundation and discovers that God’s truth is not a burden, but guidance, freedom, and life.
