π Devotional for the Day
Jesus describes His own life with one simple yet profound word: serve. He did not come to be admired, exalted, or waited upon. He came to serve. The King of heaven became a servant. The Lord of all glory stooped down to the weary, the sick, the guilty, the lonely, and those who were searching. Through His service, Godβs love became visible.
Serving like Jesus means more than occasionally doing something good. It is an attitude of the heart. A serving person does not first ask, βWhat will I get out of this?β but rather, βHow can I pass on Godβs love?β Such a person does not seek personal honor, but the good of others. People are not seen as burdens, but as opportunities to reveal Christ.
Sanctification becomes very practical in service. A character that is becoming like Christ does not remain closed in on itself. It becomes open to the needs of others. Godβs Spirit makes the heart sensitive to people who need encouragement, help, patience, comfort, or forgiveness. In this way, service becomes a school of love.
We often think of service in terms of great tasks. But Jesus showed that even small actions can be filled with heaven: a loving glance, a comforting word, patient listening, quiet help, a visit, a prayer, a burden shared. In Godβs sight, no act of service is small when it is done out of love.
Being ready when Jesus comes therefore also means having a serving character. The coming King is not preparing a self-centered people, but people who reflect His spirit. People who do not look only to their own salvation, but make Godβs love visible in everyday life.
β¨ Jesus Served Out of Love
The service of Jesus was not an outward duty, but an expression of His heart. He saw peopleβs needs. He allowed Himself to be interrupted. He took time. He touched the untouchable, called the despised, healed the suffering, and forgave the guilty.
Ellen G. White wrote:
βOnly those who are becoming more like Christ can stand when He appears.β
(Christβs Object Lessons, p. 413)
Christlikeness is shown not only in what we know, but in how we love. Whoever becomes like Jesus learns to live with a serving heart.
πΏ Service Shapes Character
When we serve, our own self is challenged. We learn patience when people need time. We learn humility when no one notices our service. We learn faithfulness when helping is inconvenient. We learn love when gratitude is absent. Precisely through this, God shapes our character.
Service is not only something that helps others. It also changes us. It frees the heart from selfishness, makes love practical, and draws us closer to Jesus. For whoever serves walks the same path that Christ walked.
ποΈ A Quiet Sign of the Coming King
A serving life is a quiet testimony. Through our attitude, people can recognize something of the character of Jesus. Perhaps they do not hear a sermon, but they experience kindness. Perhaps they hardly know the Bible, but they see patience. Perhaps they feel forgotten, but through our service they sense: God sees me.
That is why every day is an opportunity to make the character of Christ visible. Not through great words, but through selfless love. Not through religious pride, but through humble service. Not through the desire to be seen, but through the joy of passing on Godβs love.
The coming King was first the serving Redeemer. Whoever waits for His return may learn today how He lived: with open eyes, open hands, and a heart ready to serve.
π Prayer
Dear Father in heaven,
teach me to serve like Jesus.
Free my heart from selfishness, pride, and indifference.
Open my eyes to the people who today need encouragement, help, patience, or love.
Shape my character through selfless service and let Christ become visible in my behavior.
Prepare me for the return of Jesus by giving me a serving heart.
Amen.
