📘 Lesson 8: The Preeminence of Christ
👑 Why Jesus stands above all
Introduction:
This lesson leads us to the very center of the Christian faith: the unique position of Jesus Christ. In the letter to the Colossians, Paul shows that Jesus is not merely a teacher or prophet, but the Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer of all things. He is the image of the invisible God, the head of the church, and the beginning of the new creation. His supremacy is grounded in His eternal existence and His victory at the cross. Whoever recognizes Christ understands that all life, all hope, and all reconciliation have their source in Him.

🪞 8.1 Image of the Invisible God
Jesus – the perfect and living image of the Father
Human beings were created in the image of God, but this image has been damaged by sin and is only partially visible. In the Bible, “image” can mean a representation, a likeness, or a spiritual reflection, yet none of these meanings fully captures what is said about Christ. Jesus is not merely a mirror or an approximation of God — He is the perfect image of His being (Heb. 1:3). In Him, the invisible God becomes visible, audible, and knowable. That is why Jesus can say, “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father.” If Jesus were not truly God, then God would have sent a created being — but the gospel proclaims something far greater: God Himself came in Christ to save us.
👑 8.2 Firstborn over All Creation
Christ – supreme in rank, nature, and eternity
In the biblical context, “firstborn” does not necessarily mean the first created, but the one with priority, honor, and special status. Paul makes it clear that Jesus is not part of creation but its Creator: all things were created through Him and for Him (Col. 1:16). He existed “before all things” and stands above everything in time and rank. Furthermore, “in Him all things hold together” — Christ is not only the origin but also the sustainer of the universe. His supremacy rests on His creative and redemptive power. If God Himself died for us in Christ, then our works can add nothing — to think otherwise would diminish the perfect work of redemption accomplished by Jesus.
🧑🤝🧑 8.3 Head of the Body (the Church)
Christ – source of leadership, life, and unity
When Paul calls Jesus the “head of the church,” he describes Him as the one who gives authority, guidance, and spiritual life. Just as the head directs and sustains the body, Christ leads and preserves His church (Col. 2:19). The metaphor of the body in 1 Corinthians 12 also shows that all members are different yet equally important. No part can exist independently, and none is unnecessary. The church lives through its connection to Christ and through the mutual support of its members. Recognizing Christ as Head also means recognizing the value of every individual within the body.
🌅 8.4 The “Beginning” (and Initiator)
Christ – origin of creation and new creation
When Paul calls Christ the “beginning,” he describes Him as the origin and initiator — both of creation and of the church. Just as He called everything into existence in the beginning, through His resurrection He establishes the new creation. As the “firstborn from the dead,” He stands at the head of a new humanity that receives life through Him. His supremacy is grounded not only in His eternal existence but also in His victory over sin and death. Christ is therefore Head, Origin, and Finisher at the same time. Giving Him first place in life means allowing Him to guide our thinking, decisions, and priorities.
✝️ 8.5 To Reconcile All Things
The cross – God’s universal answer to sin and separation
In Colossians 1:19–20, Paul shows that in Christ the fullness of God dwells and that through His cross all things are to be reconciled — on earth and in heaven. This reconciliation is not merely personal but cosmic: the entire universe becomes a witness to God’s justice and love. At the cross, God defeated sin and death not through force but through self-sacrificing love. What appeared to be defeat became the greatest victory and the revelation of His true character. Through Christ’s sacrifice, every question in the great controversy is answered and God’s character is vindicated before all intelligent beings. The reconciliation is therefore comprehensive — it concerns not only humanity but the entire created universe.

Christ at the center of creation, redemption, and the church
Lesson 8 highlights the unique and absolute supremacy of Jesus Christ. He is the perfect image of the invisible God and reveals the Father in character and nature. As “firstborn,” He stands not as a creature but as Creator and Sustainer over all. He is the head of the church and the beginning of the new creation through His resurrection. At the cross, He conquered sin and death and accomplished a reconciliation that embraces the entire universe. Christ is therefore origin, center, and goal of all things — and deserves the first place in our lives.
