🏔️ Judges 18 – A tribe searches for a home
🗺️ How people go their own way—and still need God’s help
🌼 Introduction
Sometimes people don’t really know where they belong.
That’s how it was for an entire tribe in Israel—the Danites.
They still didn’t have a fixed place to live, no city, no home.
And so a long, exciting journey begins—with spies, a stolen statue, a family that has to make decisions …
and God’s gaze that sees everything 👀.
📖 The Bible story
In the land of Israel there was a tribe called Dan.
The people there had no place of their own to live. No city, no land that belonged to them.
So one day they said:
🗣️ “We must set out and look for a place!”
🔍 The five scouts
Five brave men were sent out.
They were to see where there might be land where people could live well.
They walked for many days—over hills, through valleys, past rivers.
And then—completely exhausted—they came to the house of a man named Micah.
Micah had built his own little shrine.
With silver figures, his own prayers, and …
a young Levite who served as priest.
The scouts were amazed 😮
“A private priest? A private statue? We’ve never seen anything like this!”
They asked the Levite:
“Can you tell us if God will make our journey succeed?”
And the Levite answered kindly:
✨ “Go in peace—God will go with you.”
With that courage in their hearts, they continued on their way.
🏙️ The city of Laish
After a long search, they reached a city far in the north: Laish.
The people there lived peacefully—no wars, no walls, no enemies.
They were friendly, but also careless.
They weren’t prepared if someone attacked them.
The scouts ran back to their people and said excitedly:
🎉 “We found land! Lots of space! Many fields! No war!”
⚔️ 600 warriors set out
Soon a large army was ready.
600 men, strong, with weapons, with courage in their hearts.
Women, children, animals—everyone set out.
It was like a big traveling village 🚶♂️🚶♀️🐑.
But on the way they came again to Micah’s house.
And this time…
they looked more closely at the statues.
The men said:
💬 “Why should we go farther if we can find idols here—and even a priest? We’ll take them with us!”
They went into the house
👉 took the statues, the silver, the idol figures
👉 and said to the priest:
🗣️ “Would you rather be priest for a small family…
or priest for a whole tribe?”
The Levite thought for a moment …
and then said 😊:
“I’ll go with you.”
Micah saw them leaving and cried out desperately behind them:
“Give me back my gods! My figures! My priest!”
But the men said:
⚔️ “If you follow us, it will end badly for you. Better go home!”
And Micah could do nothing.
🏞️ The tribe of Dan gets a land
The Danites captured the city of Laish.
They built houses, fields, walls, and named their city Dan.
They married there, had children, built a new life.
But something was missing:
They did not search for the true God.
They worshiped the figures they had taken from Micah.
And they didn’t notice how far their hearts had drifted from God.
God was not angry—only sad.
Because He wanted to be their friend 💔
and they were running in the wrong direction.
