🌾 What Truly Matters in the End
📖 Matthew 3:12
“His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Matthew 3:12
John had just explained to his listeners that the coming Messiah was greater than he was and would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. He now used an image that the people of his time knew very well from daily life: the cleaning of grain after the harvest. At first, the wheat and chaff were mixed together. Using a winnowing fan, the threshed grain was thrown into the air. The wind carried away the light chaff, while the heavier kernels fell to the ground and could be gathered.
John was not trying to give an interesting lesson about agriculture. He was speaking about a reality that concerns every human being. Jesus is not only the Savior who offers forgiveness. He is also the Lord before whom it will one day become clear what truly has lasting value in our lives. Many things may appear important today and become meaningless tomorrow. Success, recognition, possessions, appearance, and the opinions of other people can dominate our thinking. But John directs our attention to a different question: What remains when God examines our lives?
🌾 For a Time, Wheat and Chaff Appear Equally Important
At first, everything lay together on the threshing floor. Outwardly, the wheat and chaff belonged to the same harvest. Only during the cleaning process did it become clear which was the valuable grain and which was the empty husk. This image reminds us that not everything that appears impressive outwardly has the same value before God.
Our lives can also be filled with things that seem extremely important. A good education is valuable. Success at work can be a good thing. Friendships, abilities, hobbies, and personal goals all have their place. It is not wrong to be happy about a good grade, a job well done, or a goal achieved. The problem begins only when these things determine who we are and what we live for.
We may then become extremely busy while growing spiritually empty. We accomplish many things but lose our closeness to Jesus. We know many people but scarcely make time for God. We invest hours in our future but only a few minutes in our hearts.
John reminds us that not everything that appears great today will also be great in eternity. And some things that scarcely anyone notices today may be of immeasurable value before God.
👀 Jesus Sees More Than Your Outward Appearance
People usually judge one another by what they can see. We see clothing, faces, behavior, achievements, and words. We see what someone posts, how that person presents themselves, and the impression they make. But we do not always see what is happening beneath the surface.
Jesus sees deeper.
He sees not only that you were kind, but also why you were kind. He sees whether you helped because you love someone or primarily because you wanted recognition. He sees not only that you prayed, but also the heart with which you came to Him.
That could be frightening if Jesus were merely waiting to discover mistakes. But this same Jesus is the One who came for sinners. The One who knows your heart completely is also the One who wants to save you.
You therefore do not need to pretend before Him.
You do not need to act as though your faith were stronger than it currently is. You may tell Him when you have doubts. You may admit when you are jealous. You may tell Him when you feel hurt, angry, or disappointed. You may even say, “Jesus, I realize that other things are currently more important to me than You are.”
Honesty before Jesus is not a sign of weak faith. It can be the beginning of deeper faith.
🎭 A Christian Facade Is Not Enough
John was speaking to people, many of whom were religious. They knew the Holy Scriptures, attended worship services, and belonged to the people of Israel. Some religious leaders were convinced that this placed them safely on the right side. But John had already told them that their heritage alone was not enough. God was seeking fruits worthy of repentance.
The same remains true today.
A person can know Christian songs, attend church regularly, quote Bible verses, and still be inwardly far from Jesus. Someone can even tell other people about God while keeping parts of their own life closed to Him.
This does not mean that worship services, Bible reading, or Christian habits are unimportant. They can help us draw closer to Jesus. But they must never replace a personal relationship with Him.
Jesus does not want merely a place in your weekly schedule.
He wants your heart.
Perhaps no one else knows the difference between your outward and inward worlds. Jesus knows it. But He does not reveal it to humiliate you. He invites you to become genuine.
You do not need to play a religious role before Him. You may simply come as you are and allow Him to transform you.
🪶 Chaff Is Light—but It Carries No Life
Chaff could occupy a great deal of space while possessing almost no weight. This provides a powerful image for our lives. Our daily routines can also be filled with things that occupy much space but possess little lasting value.
We can spend hours scrolling through posts, videos, and news and afterward scarcely know how we used our time. We can become deeply preoccupied with how others see us, although their opinions may change again tomorrow. We can become upset over trivial matters while overlooking the people who need our love.
Not all these things are automatically sinful. The real question is: How much room does something occupy in my life, and what value does it truly possess?
Perhaps this is therefore a good question for this evening:
“What fills my life—and which of those things truly carries weight?”
As you reflect on this, you do not need to change everything immediately. But you can ask Jesus to show you what has received too much room and what has received too little.
Perhaps you do not necessarily need more time. Perhaps you need to give different weight to the time you already have.
❤️ What Carries Weight Before God
If many things in our lives will eventually pass away, the question arises: What remains?
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus repeatedly shows that God’s standards differ from ours. A cup of water given out of love is not meaningless to Him. A quiet prayer is not less valuable merely because no one hears it. Forgiveness that costs you dearly may be greater before God than an achievement for which a thousand people applaud.
What, then, carries weight?
Love carries weight.
Faithfulness carries weight.
Truth carries weight.
Mercy carries weight.
A heart that trusts Jesus carries weight.
A decision against sin that no one but God notices carries weight.
Perhaps your name will never become famous. Perhaps many good things you do will never become publicly known. Perhaps someone else will receive recognition for something you also helped accomplish.
That can hurt.
But your dear Papa overlooks nothing.
Nothing done out of love for Him is ever lost.
⚖️ The Judgment Makes Our Decisions Serious
The image of wheat and chaff does not speak only about which things in life are valuable. John clearly speaks about judgment. Good and evil will not continue existing side by side forever. Sin, violence, injustice, and death will one day be permanently removed.
This is a serious message, but it is also a hopeful one.
Imagine that God never brought judgment. Evil would then continue forever. People would suffer throughout eternity, violence would never end, and death would never cease. A world without final judgment would not be a world filled with love, but a world in which evil was never truly defeated.
God’s judgment therefore belongs to the good news.
Jesus will not tolerate evil forever.
He will free the world from it.
But this also means that our decisions today have significance. Jesus does not force anyone to live with Him. He invites, calls, warns, forgives, and gives grace. But He takes our response to His love seriously.
That is why John’s preaching was so urgent:
Now is the time to return to God.
🤍 You Do Not Need to Be Afraid of Jesus
Perhaps the word “judgment” still frightens you. Perhaps you immediately think about all your mistakes and ask yourself, “What if I am not good enough?”
Then remember who the Judge is.
It is Jesus.
The Jesus who took children into His arms.
The Jesus who touched lepers.
The Jesus who did not take hope away from a woman who had become guilty.
The Jesus who restored Peter after his failure.
The Jesus who gave His own life on the cross to save sinners.
You will never find security by eventually being able to say, “Now I am good enough.” Your security is found in Jesus.
This does not mean that the way we live is unimportant. Those who belong to Jesus desire to become increasingly like Him. But we do not change in order to earn His love. We change because He already loves and accepts us.
If you have fallen, go to Jesus.
If you have sinned, confess it to Him.
If you realize that your heart has grown cold, do not run away from Him.
Come closer.
The One who knows your heart is also the One who can heal it.
🧭 What Determines the Direction of Your Life?
One bad decision does not define your entire story, just as one good deed does not automatically determine your character. What matters is the direction in which your life is moving.
Perhaps you stumble while walking with Jesus. You may even fall several times because of the same weakness. The decisive question is then not only, “Did I fall?” but also, “Where do I go afterward?”
Do you move away from Jesus because you are ashamed?
Or do you return to Him?
Do you attempt to justify your sin?
Or do you honestly say, “Jesus, that was wrong. Please forgive me and help me begin again.”
A life with Jesus does not mean that you will never fall again. It means that you allow Him to raise you up repeatedly and lead you forward.
Perhaps your faith is not as strong today as you would like it to be. But if your heart says, “Jesus, I want to remain with You,” then keep going.
He will not give up on you.
⏳ What Will Remain from This Day?
In a few minutes or hours, you may be asleep. August 25 will then soon belong to the past. Some things that upset you today will be completely unimportant in a few weeks. Some worries that appear enormous today will later be scarcely remembered.
But perhaps there were also moments today that carry more weight than you realize.
Perhaps you listened to someone.
Perhaps you rejected a temptation.
Perhaps you prayed for someone.
Perhaps you apologized.
Perhaps you read this devotional this evening, although you were tired, because you wanted to draw closer to Jesus.
God sees these things.
Life does not consist only of major decisions. Our character is also formed through many small moments in which we choose whom to trust and which voice to follow.
You therefore do not need to accomplish something extraordinary every day.
But each day you can ask:
“Jesus, what truly mattered in Your eyes today?”
🌱 Jesus Gathers What Belongs to Him
John’s image contains another beautiful statement that can easily be overlooked. He says not only that Jesus cleanses the threshing floor. He also says:
“… gather His wheat into the barn.”
Jesus knows what belongs to Him.
The image is not only about separation, but also about gathering and preserving.
Jesus never loses sight of His people.
Perhaps you sometimes feel insignificant. Perhaps you have the impression that no one truly sees what is happening within you. Perhaps you wonder whether your small life matters to God at all.
But Jesus knows you.
You are not merely a number in a large crowd to Him. He knows your name, your story, your struggles, and your longing for Him.
If you belong to Him, you may entrust yourself to His love.
Your life is not in the hands of an indifferent God.
It is in the hands of Jesus.
🌙 Before You Fall Asleep Tonight
Perhaps this is a good evening to stop evaluating your life according to what other people think about it.
Not according to likes.
Not according to recognition.
Not according to success.
Not according to whether you are better or worse than someone else.
Instead, ask:
“Jesus, what truly carries weight in my life?”
Perhaps you will realize that you are investing a great deal of energy in something that ultimately has little significance. But perhaps you will also recognize that some quiet decisions are more valuable than you previously realized.
You do not need to present a perfect record tonight.
You may simply place your life before Jesus.
With everything valuable.
With everything empty.
With everything that went well.
With everything you regret.
And then you can say:
“Jesus, let those things grow in my life that will endure before You.”
💭 Think About It
Which things currently occupy a great deal of room in your life, although they may possess little lasting value? What would Jesus describe as “wheat” in your life—as something growing from love, truth, and faithfulness? And is there something you would consciously like to place into His hands tonight?
🌟 Thought for Tomorrow
Tomorrow, when you face a decision, consciously ask yourself:
“Will this still be important in one week? Will it still be important in one year? And does it matter to Jesus?”
You do not need to think deeply about every small matter. But choose one moment in which you would normally act only according to your feelings or the opinions of others, and instead ask what truly carries weight.
Ask Jesus to help you waste less energy on “chaff” and invest more time in what will endure in His eternity.
🙏 Prayer
Dear Papa,
thank You for knowing my life better than anyone else. You see not only my outward appearance, but also my heart, my motives, my struggles, and my desires.
Please help me recognize what truly possesses value in my life. I so easily spend time and strength on things that appear important today and are forgotten tomorrow. Show me where I am too strongly guided by recognition, success, or the opinions of others.
Let those things grow in my life that will endure before You. Give me love, faithfulness, honesty, mercy, and a heart that trusts Jesus.
Thank You that I may have hope in the judgment—not because I am perfect, but because Jesus is my Savior. When I fall, help me not to run away from You, but to return to You.
Cleanse my heart from everything that separates me from You, and let my life belong increasingly to Jesus.
When I feel small or insignificant, remind me that You know me and never lose sight of me.
I do not want to live only for things that quickly pass away. I want to live for what truly matters in Your eyes.

Not everything that appears great today will remain. But your dear Papa sees every quiet “yes” to Jesus and forgets nothing that is done out of love.
